I never got to see the full version of Cats on Broadway or on television as well before it retired. Are there any fans out there? IÂ’m not a fan yet unless I see it, and right now the prospect of dancing cats singing and gallivanting around doesnÂ’t seem enticing. :(

I saw it on t.v. and needless to say it is... unique. lol. I don't remember much of it to tell you the truth, but what I do recall is that I wasn't that excited. Some of the songs are pretty neat, but I'd have to see it again before I could really say if I truly like it or not. I give props to the dancers - I'd barely be able to dance 5 minutes of some of it, lol. And I *definitely* give everyone major props for wearing that make-up!

I saw it at Toby's Dinner Theater in MD last summer, and got the ALW DVD collection (including Cats) last Christmas. I enjoyed it quite a bit. If you're willing to put aside the fact that there's very little storyline, I think you'll find it quite entertaining. Unfortunately, I missed the touring production that came to Hawaii last month! I wish they had stayed for more than a week. :(

I'm familiar with "Memory" which i think is a lovely song, but that is about it. Otherwise I don't know anything about it. One of my friends saw it years ago and said it was wonderful. I want to see it though, and build up my ALW collection. :D

I dislike Cats - I'm not one of those that hate it with a passion but I just don't get it... I do however love "Memory" and "Mr Mistopheles(sp?) but apart from that I'm really not a big fan

I was fortunate enough to see it live at Chanhassen in MN. I thought it was fabolous. Mind you, the whole cast was in Spandex, which is a little odd, but the music was great. And practically the whole thing was singing and dancing. From what I remember, there were only about 5-10 spoken lines in the whole thing.

One of my favorite parts was how they interacted with the audience. They were always, always running through the isles and hanging out in the balconies. It was really fun to watch.

Memory is one of the most popular songs from Cats lol, because you'll see renditions of it everything and near between. I've wanted to see it because I've been an opera fan for a few years, though I hate I missed it in Broadway. I'll have to find the DVD or something.

I saw the tour version live one time, and I do have the video recording, but I don't count CATS among my favorites. I thought it was good in its own way, but not enough to see more than once or twice.

It wasn't my favorite, considering there wasn't much of a plot. However, I did love the dancing, and the songs were quite good, too. If I had to pick favorite characters, I'd have three: Mister Mestopheles, Skimbleshanks (the rail-way cat! :D ), and Munkustrap. Ohh, Munkus, how I love thee. ^^;;; I must say, whoever that actor was looked GOOD in the make-up and costume! LOL

I saw the production of it a couple of years ago. I thought it was okay, some of the songs were really neat. I liked the Mr. Mestopheles and Memory sequences the best.

My favorites were "Memory" and "Macavity the Mystery Cat". I have the VHS of the musical, and as long as you can put aside the fact that there's no plot whatsoever, it's actually a good piece of work. Most people don't get "Cats", but I grew up with it -- I've had the tape of it since I was little and used to watch it every time I visited my grandmother. She probably got sick to death of it!

Haha, it was the same for me too. Very few people can pull off Spandex, but this guy was an exception. :D

I wish I could have seen it on Broadway, but at least I didn't watch it at a small theater. I don't have anything to compare it to, but I still thought they did well where I saw it.

I just watched it for the first time last night. It was quite interesting. I didn't understand most of it. It was just cats dancing around, and singing about their names. I agree, that some songs are cool, like "Memory" and "Mr. Mistoffelees" (I looked up the spelling). The "Jellicle Ball" was kind of long and annoying. But even though I like a few songs, I'm not planning on buying the movie, or the soundtrack.

I thought it was interesting and fun to watch, but out of all the ALW's I know well, it is probably my least favorite. It does however, take amazing talent to preform... the cast members have to be great singers and dancers.

OFF TOPIC:
cinty, i love your sig... I just spent about ten minutse watching it...

That's very true. It must have took them a long time to get all those dancing routines down. They did a good job on dancing, but I couldn't understand what some were singing about - the words, and the point of them.

I just got the VHS tape of it and fell in love with a few songs. I found it entertaining and fun to watch. My favourite songs would have to be Magical Mr. Mistoffelees and Memory. Most people I talk to who have seen it on Broadway and in other places loved it! But unfortunately I never got to see it live on stage. But for those who haven't seen it at all I really suggest to go and buy the DVD or VHS if you are interested in seeing it. I got it at Suncoast.... But I would think most stores would sell the DVD.

Well unlike most of you all, I am a HUGE fan of cats! I'm almost as obsessed about it as POTO . . . Nah :)

But anyways, my favorite cats in order are, Rum Tum Tugger(He looks so fine, even if he is dressed up like a cat), Magical Mr. Mistafolees, Mungojerrie and Rumpleteza, and finally Jimima. But what the heck, I love them all!

I see that most of you are confused about the plot and why they are singing about their names just as I was when I first saw it and I'll gladly expain it to the best of my ability.

Here we go, Once a year all of the Jellicle cats come out at night where the Jellicle ball will take place, singing dancing etc. The whole point of this event is that one cat only will be chosen by their leader to be reborn into a different Jellicle life(reincarnated)

The reason the cats dance and everyone sings about them is because they are trying to impress the leader and their family that they are the best choice for the cat who should be reborn. That is the main plot but the story also tells of a rejected cat Grizzabella who just wants to be loved and to fit in. Also an evil character named Macavity who tries to ruin everyones fun.

I hope I cleared up everything and everyone should definitley watch this musical especially if you love the arts as much as I do!

Its touring in england i shall be seeing it soon but in the mean time i have to make do with the video. It is so entertaining with amazing dances and great singing the plot is complex and a little weird but overal its really entertaining. I suggest you by the book its a poem book by T. S Eliot called Practical cats or something like thati can't really remeber but anyway the musical is based on that book and the lyrics in it are very similar to the original poems.

Yep, it's Old Possum's Book of Cats by T.S. Elliot.

I believe that's the title, my memory's a bit rusty.

I remember when I went through a CATS phase in junior high school. When I was in sixth grade, I wanted to be a cat and get to prowl around onstage. A few years ago, my mother and I saw a production of it at a nearby theatre and it was marvellous. We were sitting up close, so it kind of made the experience even better - as the set and the costumes were simply amazing.

When I was very young, I saw little clips of cats on TV on Great Performances and Reading Rainbow

Cats is a remainder of my old days and lost childhood.
I didn't think much of it for a long time UNTIL I became interested in Broadway after liking POTO
I happened to hear "Memory" on my friend's IPod and I feel in love!
All my young memories came back to me.

I just got to see the DVD and it was AWESOME!

No one I know likes Cats Unfortunately :(

Actually, It's Grizzabella, Erika.

Oh my gosh, I love Rumpelteazer! I watched my friend's school's preformance of it. It made me laugh because none of them could sing and dance at the same time (except my friend because she's had years of training). And then my other friend's parents were in it and I believe her father played Skimbleshanks and her mother was one of the cats singing Macavity's song.

I actually would be really good for the people up at the high school I'll be going to soon. They have this really experianced, kind of cray dance instructor. She'd EAT THIS UP.

The funny thing is, there's not really much of a plot . . . The cats all get together for the "Jellicle Ball," and some of the main ones have songs to introduce themselves. The leader, Old Deuteronomy, hosts the event to decide which cat will be reborn into a new life -- that turns out to be Grizabella, an older cat who was once beautiful, but is now scorned by the others. Here's a more complete (and official) synopsis of the story! (http://www.theatre-musical.com/cats/synopsis.html) :D

Grizabella the Glamour Cat...enough said.

There is a very loose plot, indeed. Griz is ostracized and longs to be part of the group again and is finally picked to ascend to the Heaviside Layer, to be "reborn." It's a loosely woven plot but its a great musical with awesome songs and dances. Memory is INCREDIBLE.
Most of the songs. No, all, are simply ballads and describe the cats themselves, haha.

I never understood the plot, but I find each role intriguing, even if I don't completely understand this musical. There's just not enough information, but at the same time, the lack of info also makes the veiwers imagination go crazy which is a good thing. And the music is beautiful and most of the songs are just too darn cute, as well as the kitties!

Oddly, that movie is rated PG-13 because of the outfits. But what's even odder is that they let you watch it in elementary school...

The songs get stuck in your head, which can be a good thing and a bad one. It depends on the song. SOme of the songs are really annoying, but they are catchy and cute so I listen to it anyway. it drives my sister up a wall, though.

My favorite songs are either the Rum Tum Tugger or Macavity, the Mystery Cat, although I like almost all of the other songs in their own right.

That being said, my favorite Jellicles are Macavity and the Rum Tum Tugger. I really like how the Tugger seems to be the so-called heartthrob of the group - and yet...he doesn't seem to like any of the females (excepting Bombalurina).

As to Macavity...well...I have to wonder why it is that he turned to robbery in the first place. As the story goes, he was Jennyanydots' brightest student (especially when it came to long division), but I guess something happened to make him turn to robbery. Kind of makes you go, "Hmmmm..."

Just a few of my thoughts on this wonderful musical.

PS: I'm seeing it at Music Circus tomorrow night!

I know double-posting is not usually okay, but I really wanted to post and let everyone know how Cats went on Thursday night.

Well, the show itself was BRILLIANT!! The Rum Tum Tugger - or Yum Tum Tugger, as I like to call him - was the highlight of the show for me (besides Macavity, the Mystery Cat, of course). He was played by someone named Kevin Loreque, and he totally gives Terrence Mann a run for his money! At one point in his song, he chose a random audience member to come onstage and dance with him! I wish it'd been me! I was very sad when the show was finally over because it was so good.

I know that I'm lucky to have seen it live because Cats is a show that's not on Broadway anymore. Also, their Grizabella was excellent. So I got the Ultimate Edition Cats DVD for Christmas last year, and it's everything I hoped it would be. Elaine Page is excellent as Grizabella, and Ken Page is excellent as Old Deuteronemy. I must now admit that John Partridge gives Kevin Loreque (from the live production I saw last summer) a huge run for his money! However, the way I judge something Cats-related is by whomever played Macavity. Nathan Madden was just as wonderful - if not better than - Bryn Walters!

Oh, I know what you mean about the Tugger. He's so gorgeous, and sometimes I wish I was Bombalurina. But then I think about how Angel would feel, and then I'm glad to be myself. My favorite portrayal of the Tugger has to be Terrence Mann because he's the original (just like Michael Crawford is the original Erik).

Candy Shop Mishaps

June 24, 2010

*The Rum Tum Tugger and Mr. Mistoffelees have come across a candy shop, and Tugger begs to go in*

Shopkeeper: May I help you, gentlemen?

Mistoffelees: Yes. I’m going to buy some Almond Joy bars and some Mounds bars. My friend will buy – uh-oh. I think he’s going to be awhile.

*Tugger is staring at all the different types of chocolate bars, unable to make up his mind*

Mistoffelees: *tapping his foot impatiently* C’mon, Tugger, we haven’t got all day!

Tugger: *sighs* Fine, fine. I’ll buy some dark chocolate Hershey’s bars (the kind without nuts), some dark Hershey’s Kisses, and two bags of M&M’s Dark.

Shopkeeper: Will that be it, sir?

Tugger: Yes, I think so. Thank you.

Mistoffelees: *as they’re leaving* Tugger, is there something you’re not telling me?

Tugger: *narrows eyes* Such as?

Mistoffelees: The reason you can’t fit most of your clothes, or maybe…why you’re such a chocoholic all of a sudden!

Tugger: Blame Bombi – she got me hooked and now I can’t get enough.

Mistoffelees: Something tells me I need to have a talk with your girlfriend!

Tugger: NOOOOOO! ANYTHING BUT THAT! NOOOOOOOO!

Mistoffelees: *sighs heavily* Okay, okay, I won’t say anything – but you really do need to cut back on the chocolate.

Tugger: Fine. *walks away*

Mistoffelees: *holds up Tugger’s bag of chocolates* He never suspected a thing! *smirks*

Cats... What to say about Cats... Not my favourite show... at all. But I'll listen to it, and I'll sing along. I don't hate it by any means, but it's far from my favourite.

My school is doing it this year and I'm trying out for Griddlebone. But with luck, I'll get called back for Ruppleteazer. I know, sounds weird to you Cats folk, but the song I'm doing shows off belting and opera, so I'm in good shape.

Nicole,

Just to enlighten you (since I had to take a test on this for my Cats role):

Andrew Lloyd Webber read T.S. Eliot's work, and immediately, could hear and feel music to go with it. He collaborated with a well-trusted team and together, they accumulated all of his work and transformed it pretty smoothly into a musical. At first, when it was off-off-Broadway, it got scathing reviews. So they added a very strong, very prominent dance aspect. No on wants to see a bunch of cats singing on a stage. No one would pay for that. So with a LOT of dance added, the show was edited, re-released and was better accepted. After a few more years of trying, it made it to Broadway where it became the second longest running show in history. This, of course is a much shorter, condensed version of what happened, but I assume you get the idea.

Glad to clear that up.

By the way, I made an A on the Cats test. :)

*thread revival*

I'd just like to say that I love the choreography for the Rum Tum Tugger, Macavity, and Mr. Mistoffelees!

However, I also enjoyed what they did for Growltiger's part, as well as -- in the case of the 1998 film -- the Pekes and Pollicles. That was hilarious! :spin2:

I also enjoyed Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer's part because it was such a fun dance. In addition, Bustopher Jones (though he didn't really dance, per se) was interesting because of the comical aspects.

The only thing I really didn't like too much -- dance-wise -- is that the Jellicle Ball scenes dragged on a bit more than they should have.

I'm gonna have to agree with Chrissy, it's not my favorite anymore either. I realize that it's from a bunch of "nonsense poems" but there really was no compelling story line apart from Grizabella (and I'd want to play her if I was older because there's no dance involved heh). Anywho, the show has some catchy tunes and great dancing but I think you would enjoy it more if you were a dancer.

Yeah, Viktoria has a point, but I have to admit I've always been a sucker for the Rum Tum Tugger -- especially if played by Terrence Mann -- but also that I love the whole musical.

So I'm bringing this thread back to life to tell you that while I was at the Salvation Army Thrift Shop today, my mom found a CATS t-shirt for me! It's the one with "Cats" written in white letters on the front and two yellow eyes on the back. :spin2:
