The Phantom

Sandra Joseph is the current Christine on Broadway in New York City in the United States. Below is a paragraph from The Phantom of the Opera [dot] com (http://www.thephantomoftheopera.com/meet_biog_sandra_joseph.asp) that gives a little detail about her:
Sandra Joseph is thrilled to return to the Broadway company of Phantom as Christine, a role she has played here at The Majestic and in more than a dozen theatres across the U.S. Sandra is married to one of her previous Phantom co-stars, Ron Bohmer... I saw her perform in April of 2004 when I first went to New York. Her performance was phantastic in my opinion.

I haven't seen the current (or any) stage cast for POTO, but I have heard her performing some of the songs. I really like her voice, and it seems she is very good at emoting while she sings as well.
I didn't know she was married to Ron Bohmer! (I've heard him as well, and liked his voice a lot.) I wonder how many other former Phantoms (besides Bohmer and Peter Karrie) have ended up marrying Christines? And how many Raouls have married Christines? (Then again, some actors like Steve Barton and Hugh Panaro have played both roles.) :mask:

I agree about Gerry. He definitely has this soul about his voice that just speaks the Phantom. MC is great of course, but I've actually grown to love Gerry's vocals for the Phantom more.

Yep, Sandra Joseph is married to one of her former Phantom co-stars of the stage. Shes performed on the National Tour and Broadway, and is still the current Christine if Im not mistaken from what I read on TPOTO.com. She seems a bit old for the role in my opinion though.

Yeah, she's performing opposite Hugh Panaro's phantom. I think Hugh is definitely within my top 5, and possibly in my top 3 phantoms I have heard. I agree that Sandra may be a little old for the role, but she still has an awesome voice. IMO, she sounded better when she was younger and Ron Bohmer was the principal phantom. :mask:

Hmm, I've got a copy of the playbill from Broadway's Phantom of the Opera back in April 2004, when I first saw the play on my first trip to New York. Darn, I went and looked for it and I saw it no where in sight, though oddly I still have the playbill to 42nd Street.
On her official website, it said that she debuted as Christine on Broadway on January 29th, and she's been in several of the National Tours, as understudy in the 3rd one I think.
Sandra Joseph debuted on Broadway as Christine on January 29, 1998 - joining the company after playing with the 2NT for just over two years opposite Ron Bohmer, Craig Schulman, and Rick Hilsabeck... she was announced Sarah Pfisterer's replacement on the 2NT after having understudied Christine on the 3NT. I hear that Julie Hanson was far better liked than Sandra Joseph. I've heard bits of her voice and love it. Can anyone compare her to Sandra? I've yet to hear Sandra. I think that Julie looks prettier at any rate but of course looks don't matter.

I have to say that I much prefer Julie Hanson. Sandra is getting older and after playing the role for so long, it seems like she's settled into some kind of routine and that is NOT good. A performance should always be fresh. It's such a shame that Julie left. And to make matter worse, her replacement is Rebecca Pitcher. *shudders*

Speaking of Rebecca, I just got home from seeing the show on Broadway. Aside from the fact that NONE of the usual performers for the three main roles were present tonight (that's right - no Hugh OR Sandra! :(), I saw it with Rebecca. Gods, were my ears hurting after some of that. Not taht she was bad, just that.... she wasn't anywhere near as good as I was hoping for. Now, the guy playing Erik... 9 out of 10. I've heard Hugh sing, and if I'd been able to see the show with him, I'd sure I'd be giving him a 10/10, but Stephen still gets 9/10. ;) Getting a bit off topic now, though...

Sandra Joseph is one of my favorite Christines, because her voice is
clear, her acting is great, and she has a great presence on stage! She
also, cried on stage during the last scene in the Phantom's Lair. Not
many Christines I've seen, did that! Speaking of the Broadway
performance, I've also seen Julie Hanson play the role and she, is
definitly better than Sandra at the role. Now, I did'nt say S.J. was my
favorite!

I actualy really like Sandra. I thought her voice quite beautiful. She's not a "favourite" but I give her a 7 and half out of ten.

I've heard her on recordings and I don't like her voice. She sounds like she's singing while she goes over a bumpy road. lol. I like Emmy Rossum, Rebecca Pitcher, Sarah Brightman ect. but not Sandra. I'm sorry but I DO NOT like her Christine.

I personaly think any woman to get the part of Christine is worth giving a shot at it, just because the role is so demanding. Sandra Joseph was DEFINATELY someone I wanted to see at the reigns of Christine-- sadly I couldn't get down to see Phantom in New York (I still haven't seen it) but I'm excited to hear news on her book, and I can't wait till it comes out. Honestly, she seems like such a sweet, hardworking person. I'd love to meet her face to face.

I adore Sandra Joseph....I adore her acting, characterization, emotional capacity for the character....I'm still deciding about her voice.
I heard her performing the role in the mid-1990s, and then again in around 2005-6. It is evident she suffered considerable vocal deterioration within this time, because her voice in the 90s was more sweeter and lighter than it was shortly before she gave up the role.
I think, as an actress in the role she is absolutely extraordinary. For me, she goes beyond good, realistic acting into something far deeper. She literally embodies Christine's spirit. I have always been fascinated by her enormous emotional capacity in the role and the raw, truthfulness she brings to the part.
On top of that, she's an amazing person in real life! I really adore and admire her...

I have only heard her...on Hughs final night, and apparently she was very emotional...
Oh, lord, yes! Poor thing...she could scarcely get a word out she was so upset...trying talk and sob at the same time. There was this great moment when she was just starting her speech, and Hugh came over and put his arm around her, and she just gave this nervous little laugh, and doubled over in tears. It was so beautiful...Hugh got all emotional too! And there were roses...

I've heard her sing with Howard and I must say Bravo!!! It was beautiful! I just loved her tone and everything. She just had the Christine voice for it. I'm not sure about her acting *will find a youtube video* but I can tell that her voice can say it all in a CD format.

SJ has to be one of my most favorite Christine's ever. I heard her opposite Howard McGillin and she was fantastic. She does have quite a warble to her voice, but at least she could pass for an opera singer *hisses at London Christines*.
Her acting is also wonderful as she plays a very real Christine and not just a spellbound child (from reviews I've heard).
I've also heard that she's quite a nice person.

Sandra is such a lovely person. It's great because she keeps her facebook open to fans to add her. For a while she had a blog (http://www.sandrajoseph.blogspot.com) going and allowed various people to comment. It was bittersweet when she decided to stop blogging, but it was for her book (Which I'm quite excited for). She's replied to questions I've had and been so gracious with comments. :)
It's great when talented actors are so humbled and grounded, it just makes any experience with them even better.

She really is a nice person. My friend had meet her when he watched Phantom and he probably would have to say that she was his favorite out of the entire cast. For some reason he didn't like Howard's voice (pities Travis), Anywho. Her Phantom of the Opera and Point of No Return are my absolute favorites.

Who is this Travis person that scorns my Howard? *takes out punjab*
Anyway, what about her book? Is she doing that anymore? I was hoping that she would publish it since it looked so interesting.

Yea I know I wanted to rack out his brains, but I love him too much to kill him. *mutters* YOU SICK BROTHER! Okay not really my brother, but he's like my guy friend :)
She's writing a book?
The Countess

Yes, she was going to have it published about her experiances as being Christine Daae for 10 years. It sounded really interesting but I'm not sure if it's in production anymore.

I wish it would because that would be too cool to read it! I wish all actors could be open to sharing their experiences with aspiring artists..

Yes, she's still working on it. In fact, she's put her blog on hold so she can focus her writing efforts on the book.

While she's not my absolute favorite Christine ever, she's such a sweet and lovely person. I'm also looking forward to her book.

Oh, well that's good news. I'm really looking forward to what her experiances were like. It's a shame about her blog though, but I understand that she uses facebook.
