Well, there is a thread for your favorite Elphaba and favorite Glinda...but no which is your favorite character thread so, here it is. Who is your favorite character?
Elphaba
Galinda
Fiyero
Nessarose
Boq
Madame Morrible
The Wizard
Dr. Dillamond
Chistery
Dorothy
Toto
Anyone Else
Although there are many wonderful characters in Wicked, I must say that this was an automatic choice for me. Elphaba goes through so many changes and stages throughout the musical and I can relate to almost every change. Starting in the beginning when she is arriving at Shiz is particularly memorable for me. She is this female on the brink of adulthood who is seeking to learn. She has this thirst for knowledge that is apparent in her actions and words. She is intelligent as it is and ambition filled, especially being drawn toward the need to do good. She is on the edge of a lifetime; however, people hold her back because of the color of her skin. She is beautiful even with the green skin but people only see the outer and not the inner, which seems to be a reoccurring theme in today’s world. Although skin color is not as big an issue as it has been in the past, discrimination is as big a factor as ever. Whether it be about skin color, sexual orientation, social class, and a whole slew of other factors, it is still wrong and I believe everyone has been discriminated against at least once in their life. The strong need for acceptance is another issue I relate to. In today’s time, everyone just wants to be accepted by society. We sometimes go through hell to make ourselves different but there has been a time when we wanted that normalcy. Although Elphaba may deny wanting acceptance, it is a deep longing that she feels. She wants to be just like everyone else in the sense of her skin.
When she learns the truth about the Wizard and is used, all her hopes and dreams are shot down. She is shattered and heartbroken and she channels that through in Defying Gravity. It's almost an instant change in her from teen to adult. She is a woman fighting for a cause and then, as time passes, she turns into a woman in love. The overall transformation is just spellbounding to me and the story of Wicked is suppose to be about The Wicked Witch of the West anyway. It wasn't until they began writing the musical with Kristin and Idina that they put more in about Glinda. That being said, Elphaba trumps all for me. Although Fiyero and Glinda are awesome characters too. The depth to Elphaba is what sends her over the top I think.
