Everyone from Miss Piggy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=520K7C5eiwc) (couldn't resist the link) to my grandma knew who he was. His grandeur and natural talent were undeniable, and his voice is unforgettable.

Sadly, this icon of opera is gone. An age has passed, and the entire world is reeling at the loss of such a legend.

Any thoughts?

I heard last night, and it made me very sad. He died of pancreatic cancer, and was seventy-one years old.

The world has lost two great icons in the span of a month -- first Beverly Sills, now Luciano Pavarotti. Yes, an age of opera is passing by quickly. I just hope the next age of opera doesn't become cheap and clichéd and generally terrible, like so many other things in the music world and the world in general.

Oh my gosh, in choir today my director was talking and went "Did you guys know Pavarotti died today?" and we were all *jaw drop*. I remember hearing about Pavarotti since I was a little kid. There will definitely never be another to match him!

I'm crying as I type this. Pavarotti, a talented man, a kind man... This is just shocking. His voice was amazing and he was-- is a legend. My sister told me a few hours ago and I cried, and I still am. Then he came on my radio station and I bawld. I'm wiping my tears and they are now gone, but I am still sad. Pavarotti was amazing and I am shocked and upset about his death. Nobody had a voice like his, and no one ever will.

Has anyone seen "Yes, Giorgio", the film in which he played a romantic lead? He was charming, but it wasn't a success. Still, some fans might enjoy seeing him in this love story:
From Wikipedia:
"Yes, Giorgio is a 1982 musical/comedy starring Luciano Pavarotti. He plays an Italian opera singer by the name of Giorgio Fini who loses his voice while in America, and is treated by a female throat specialist, played by Kathryn Harrold, with whom he falls in love.

Awards and nominations
Golden Globes
Nominated: Best Original Song - Motion Picture ("If We Were In Love")
Academy Awards
Nominated: Best Music, Original Song ("If We Were In Love")
Golden Raspberry Awards
Nominated: Worst Actor (Luciano Pavarotti)
Nominated: Worst New Star (Luciano Pavarotti)
Nominated: Worst Screenplay (Norman Steinberg)" *ouch*

I remember that the studio believed it would be a surefire hit since he was so popular with the public, not just with opera buffs. I remember watching it a couple of times on a cable channel but don't recall seeing it offered on network television. Maybe someone should air it.

Like Beverly Sills, he did reach beyond the bounds of opera to become recognizable to nearly everyone.

Kearyn (Christine's Shadow) sent me this link. It's Pavarotti and James Brown! Enjoy!

That was amazing and so touching.

I found this one, and it actually made me cry. Its Queen and Pavarotti (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7FGPIRJx6I&mode=related&search=) sining live.

And here's Bocelli and Pavarotti (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeDXhIjdcLY&mode=related&search=)singing live, also very touching. Hearing and seeing Luciano Pavarotti makes me cry. He was such an amazing person. I can't believe my friend said his name sounded like a type of cracker spread. Shame on her!

When I heard the news, it didn't come as a shock to me. I had already heard that he was gravely ill. But, when I woke up to the news, it felt like a little part of my childhood died, too.

I grew up watching Pavarotti in concerts and in operas on PBS when I was little...I started when I was about four. I was the crazy little girl who liked that sort of thing and many of my friends didn't quite get it.

My late foster-mother and I often watched those PBS programs together. In 1999, we finally got to see him live when he did a concert here. It was a wonderful experience, finally hearing him in person like that.
