View Full Version : Gerard Butler [Phantom]
The Phantom

Gerard Butler was not that bad of a Phantom in the movie that came out in 2005. His singing wasn't that bad, though it was noticibly weak in some areas of the soundtrack. He had a way of carrying his body while portraying Phantom that seemed to make the girls just melt for him. Discussion on the actor Gerard Butler is in this thread.

Hmm yeah, Gerry certainly did a good job of the singing seeing as he isn't a trained singer (like Patrick Wilson & Emmy Rossum are) though he had some training for the movie.. As you said, there are points of the soundtrack where his voice goes a bit odd...
I think he's a brilliant Phantom - the stance and movements that he did worked brilliantly for the character - although I kinda think he did rather too much of the cloak swishing stuff (although it was very cool. Ah I love that cloak!) and he came across as both sinister & helpless and lonely. Poor thing.

I thought Gerry was an amazing Erik. He had such passion, such a vivid sexuality...he had something that none of the other Eriks had. And being that this was his first singing role in anything (well, besides a band he used to play in when he was in high school...or was it college?), I think his voice was incredible. I mean, don't get me wrong, Michael Crawford's voice is truly unique, incomparable in its originality...but Gerry added something to the role that I had never seen before in the Broadway or any of the other movies. Brava, Gerry, brava!
By the way, it's 'Gerard,' not 'Gerald.'

Coming from a guy, whose is straight lol, I could tell that The Phantom had something about him that was really different from the other people who have portrayed Erik in the past. Body language is everything in these days and times. One of my friends who I saw the movie with fell in love with the way he carried himself.
Thanks for informing me of his name, LOL! I fixed it in the thread so theres no more mispelled Gerry names.

He is very very handsome, and he put so much passion and work into the role. I don't think he is very good at sining, but I think, considering his small amount of training, he was realy good. his Music of the Night impresses me because he reached the high notes and held that last note for so long. Although his voice isn't that great, hats off to him for putting all that effort into getting it as righ as he could.
On the whole, although he rally is too handsome for the role, I do like him a great deal and think he was well cast.

I must say that I loved Gerry even before I saw The Phantom. Actually I`m not really a fan of musicals and when I heard that Gerry is doing one I just had to see it. And he didn`t disapoint me. He was amazing. Just fantastic!
I loved the movie and now I love that musical.

I am a great fan of Gerry's Phantom - to say he hadn't sung before the role shows great passion and committment to forward his work and extend to something interesting - it also shows he's willing to try something new and work very hard for what he wants. :mask:

I think his voice was very strong for someone who'd never sung professionally before, and considering how tough a role it is, I think he sang it admirably. I think he was let down towards the end, though, because I felt he was partially drowned out by the instruments.

Gerard. Aah, yes. :-p He's very good-looking. And he has one of the better voices of the cast. He used his voice really expressively, all the emotions were so clear! (Am I correct in thinking that he's a tenor?)

I`ve seen that movie also. Loved it, ofcourse. Actually, I only saw it because I went to the wrong hall:o and ended up watching the wrong movie:D

Huh. I always thought he was a baritone. ;)
I really liked his portrayal of Erik. He's not the best singer they could have chosen, but his acting and emotion are absolutely awesome. I did not like the "sunburn" they gave him, though. It was realistic, yes, but IMO it wasn't nearly ugly enough for him to have to wear a mask and be treated as a freak all his life. :mask:

i must agree with you. i really liked his portrayal, but the makeup wasn't nearly intense enough. But still, we can't have everything.

Yeah, the really disappointing thing for me was that since this was a film (and they wouldn't have to worry about whether he could still sing with the makeup on), they could have made him even uglier than the stage version if they had wanted to. But regardless of that one issue, I still loved Gerry's Erik. I can't wait until tomorrow, when I can have the DVD at last!!! :D

Gerry has a more "manly" voice I think compared to Michael Crawford, though Crawford is always going to be the best Phantom ever, Gerry was more seductive and manly.
My favourite Gerry scene is when he is singing "The Point of No Return" with Emmy. The black suit, the black mask, the red glow all around him. *faints*

05-03-2005, 04:33 AM
lol raoul! I know how you feel about ponr! Gerard's voice is more manly than MC's... but Erik's voice isn't supposed to be "manly", it's meant to be "angelic". All the same, I do love Gerry's voice. :D

Ah, *swoon*. I adore Gerry as the Phantom. Even though he's not a professional singer, I think he sings excellent, especially for the role...the emotion in his voice and his incredible acting more than make up for the lack of high notes as far as I'm concerned. I dunno, it just seems more fitting to me that the Phantom should have a deep, strong voice, with a bit of an edge...(something I definitely think Gerry has). I do agree they could have made him a bit uglier...because I still thought he was gorgeous when Christine unmasked his face, lol. And his 'Death' costume...wow... isn't it supposed to be scary not sexy? lol. I'll stop rambling now...if you couldn't tell, I'm a bit of a fan...hehe.

I liked him as Phantom. I don't really remember what the voice of the phantom that I saw in the musical sounded like so I quiet liked his voice. I think it was a little raspy in some parts but it was good.
I also found it odd how he ran up onto the horse and was singing...but I guess it was supposed to be dramatic.

Gerard is one of my favorite Phantoms so far, if not my absolute favorite. I've heard about six different ones through CD recordings (which I can't recall offhand, I know one is a 1994 London production...) and his voice is one of my favorites.
When I read the book (after seeing the movie and hearing soundtracks), I decided that, to me, the Phantom should have a "manly" voice, even with what cinty said about his voice having to be "angelic." In my opinion, "manly" and "angelic" can go together very well.
Gerry is quite good looking as well, which doesn't hurt. :D

I think MC is the best Phantom ever, but I also think there are a few songs Gerry did a *lot* better with...
I was listening to my OCR and then to the film soundtrack when I noticed that Gerry puts a *lot* of emotion into his voice during PoNR and DOM; whereas Michael sounds like he's bored by the whole affair... Just my opinion; please don't Punjab me! *raises hand to level of eyes* ~lol~

That I can agree with fully. But then again, I just like Gerry better all-around, so I guess I'm a bit biased.

Amen to that!
Gerry is the master of PONR...I doubt anyone could do that part better than him. That song requires an awful lot of sexuality, and MC just doesn't do it for me. PONR was Gerry's crowning acheivement in that movie...and I love how he shouts "This darkness deep as HELL!" instead of actually singing it. That adds a lot of emotion to the scene.
But...MOTN is MC's domain. Though I absolutely adore Gerry's interpretation (my favorite out of all film/musical versions), MC dominated MOTN, and to me, his voice was perfect for that part. It was so creepy, so inticing...he had that (for lack of a better term) mood down pat, and it sends shivers up my spine when I listen to it.
Overall, however, Gerry's voice seems to be more Phantom-ish than MC's. It full of sensuality and mystery, the perfect blend for Erik.

I agree with all of you about PONR. :tp7: The only stage phantoms I've heard who can even compare are John Owen-Jones and Hugh Panaro. I also loved the emotion Gerry put into the final lair scene. I'm listening to it as I type, and I love every minute of it! :D

I think that he did a great job and that he is a very talented actor; he also sings very well for an untrained man ... he also hides his accent very well and what can I say ... the first time I went to the movie was cause one of my freinds wanted 2 see him ... lol. after that I fell in love with the movie :)

I don't really agree with that. I can see it to a point, but, overall, I think Gerry did much better on MotN. This is purely my opinion. Then again, I like how this other guy (I can't remember his name! I don't know where my CD case is either...) more than Gerry's version, so everything is relative.

I love Gerry's verson of MotN. I think it is my favorute followed closely by the MC verson on my ALW premire CD. But as far as PONR is concerned, no other Phantom that I have heard even came close to having the same impact with the music that Gerry had.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to be posting this, but here goes... I'm attending a Tart Convention in June. What is a tart, you might ask? Well, besides being the old term for a prostitute (...), it also refers to the devoted fans of Gerard Butler.
And what will the convention entail, you may be wondering? A bunch of tarts from the East Coast getting together and having a party. Lots of "What if's" will be tossed around, and buckets of drool will be present after watching hours of good Gerry films. I, of course, will be vehemently devoted to my love of Erik, who comes before Gerry any day of the week, but still... This should be fun! I'll post pics after the convention.

Opinions very as to who is the best Phantom. Those who saw Michael Crawford on stage will think that he IS the best Phantom. I saw Rick Hulsbeck do it at the Auditorum theatre, Chicago in the summer of 1994. Doug LaBreaque was fantastic!! in Toranto at the Pantages theatre ,as he took over the role when the actor doing the part went on vacation.
However, Gerald Butler has imortalized the part forever on film. I think that he was great in the role. The problem is, however, that he was much sexier then the actor playing Raoul, and that is where the confusion lays. Most of the people in the theatre that I saw the movie, wanted Christine to go with the Phantom. Butler smolders with sex, especally during the song "Point of no return" where the black mask he is wearing makes him look even more sexy ( Whew, my heart beats faster just thinking about that scene!). I see new layers of his performence with each viewing of my DVD.
Although this movie bombed at the box office, I think that with time, it will take on a whole new life on DVD. I have fallen in love with this movie. The two disc movie soundtrack on Sony Music, is worth having as well as it is a jewel.

I went into it, already disappointed with the fact that not only would Erik/The Phantom be played by someone so young, when he is supposed to be in his fifties, but also because they were making him handsome, when Erik is anything but handsome. However, Gerard's performance, the passion he put into the role, won me over, and I think he did an outstanding job.
The Khanum
06-03-2005, 09:43 PM
In an interview with Joel Schumaker, the director, he said that he wanted to make a "young" movie, meaning that all the major characters were in their twenties/thirties. Gerard was thirty-three when he filmed Phantom (a year older than twice Emmy's age, sixteen, at the time of filming...I find that funny and sort of sexy at the same time...), and I think that he look a lot younger. But I believe Joel and Andrew were going for something a little different than in the stage/books: Almost all the other versions did have Erik being in his fifties...I don't think that would have worked for this movie. As Michael and many others have said, Gerry gave Erik that much-needed fiery sexuality. Can you picture getting a fifty-year-old singing PONR like Gerry did?
I think the fact Gerry is young added to his superb performance. Brava, Gerry!

AHHH, I had one of the most MARVELOUS times I have ever had in my entire life! You have no idea what it's like sitting in a room with a bunch of women who have been called "insanely obsessive" as much as you have! It's wonderful!
And the props... Omygoodness, what can I say about the props?
I have only a vague recollection of them...my mind seemed to have blanked out during those moments when she pulled out the mask from its beautiful case and held it up for all to see. It was...truly breathtaking. And there was a hair! Yes, a hair! On the inside! GERRY'S hair! We could clone him! ::SQUEE!!::
And here's the best part...I wore the gloves from the MOTN scene, the cape from the POTO theme scene, and a Phantom mask (not the real one...nobody touched it. The person who owns it even wears white gloves while handling it!)...and I got my picture taken in my ACTUAL Phantom attire! I was Erik for a few precious, beautiful moments... ::Sighs dreamily::
Twas truly a night I shall never forget...I haven't been that happy since I saw the movie for the first time! OH, I almost forgot! I won the big prize raffle! A $200 silver necklace from Kay Jewelers with "Tart" inscribed on it...I've worn it everyday since! And a Gerry shirt with his picture on it... ::Is overwhelmed at the memories:: I wore my Gerik ensemble to school on Monday, and I think I converted a few Newbie tarts just with his face on my shirt!
As I said to a friend of mine, I was wearing sex reincarnate on my chest.

There are actually quite a few of those guys that would be good in the role - Gerry, Clive Owen, James Purefoy, Ioan Gruffudd, Eric Bana.
Gerry would make an awesome Bond - he's tall, dark, sexy, majorly goodlooking, brilliant actor, good at doing the baddy role (go watch Tombraider 2)... he'd be wonderful! I've never seen any of the 007 films, but if Gerry becomes Bond, I'm watching!
I just voted Gerry one ahead of Adrian Paul. Gerry has 14698 votes, Adrian Paul has 14697.

Am I the only person who would hate Gerard Butler in the roel of James Bond?
I seriously don't hope he takes it up, I liek him much more in the roles he does now, I don't want to see him as the flitasious british agent...
Dont' do it Gerry!
The Khanum

Have you seen TR2, Night Feather? If not, then I wouldn't recommend it...or Rockstar... Yeah. He plays similar roles. Except TR2, he's kind of a bad guy. Sort of. Not quite.
I don't know.
Everybody else, go vote! :D And Night Feather, I know what you mean...I want him to take the role so I can see a movie in which he doesn't: A) Die a slow and painful death, or B) Lead a horrible and otherwise completely lonely life. Most of his films have a tendency to end that way... TR2, Reign of Fire, POTO, Attila, Rockstar, Jewels of the Sahara, Dracula... Poor guy. He never gets a brake.
Well, except for Timeline and Game of Their Lives. Those are happy. :D
And if he does get Bond, maybe his fan club will expand...that's always a good thing. ;)

Gerard Butler: 15596 votes ( 35.9 % )

I voted as well. I think Gerry would make an awesome Bond. Girls love him, he's suave and has an air of danger about him, and he's done Bond-like roles before, especially in Tomb Raider 2.
Plus, he was a minor character in Tomorrow Never Dies, so it won't be his first encounter with 007. :D
My only real problem with him getting the role of Bond is that it's a potential career-killer. Few actors who play Bond have gotten any good movie roles afterward. Then again, the same can be said of actors who played the Phantom on stage. (Coincidence?) However, Gerry's an awesome actor, so he can probably still get to do awesome films after he's through being a spy. And to answer Night Feather's question, Pierce is English, not Scottish. In fact, the only Scot to play 007 was Sean Connery.

I really liked Gerry. I've said this before, but even though he is the only Phantom I've ever seen, there was something about him that just drew me to him. He seemed so mysterious and forbidden. He also seemed so sad and lonely. I just wanted to go give him a big hug.
He really pulled PONR really well. I would melt into his arms too. He was really hot, and I really don't think that the deformity he had earned his life of hiding. It wasn't until I started reading phanphiction and I read discriptions by people who had read the book did I understand that it was supposed to be a lot worse then that. It just looked like he had an accident with some hot water when he was a kid.
But he carried himself so well that I really believed that he had been shunned all his life. Although I didn't understand why, I could really see this behavior, this posture, from someone who lived a life of solitude.

Gerald was NOT BAD in thie movie, I didn't meen to imply that at all.
What I said was that he is to sexy to come across as someone who is hidious, and that is why PARTS of this movie don't work. Butler is a BRILLANT ACTOR. I 've watched my DVD at leaet 40 times and he has made the role his own, I'm only sorry that he was not nominated for an OSCAR.
Watching his smouldering good looks, would you have gone with Raoul in stead of HOTTIE Gerald?.
Common, admit it!, You know that the boy you'd being going home with is GERRY BABY!!! ( Laughing real hard on this end) Thanks for your reply

Just in case any of you wondered where the Gerard Butler threads went, there were so many I merged them all into the original Gerry thread in Behind the Mask. The good side of it is that you've got a nearly full thread. I guess the Butler is liked by all. ;)

Yes. While I am slightly upset about the changes made to the Phantom's character to make him more appealing, Gerry did an excellent job of bringing him to life. I think it's sad that the critics kept bashing the film, though. Most didn't even have a good reason for it; they just had a grudge against ALW or JS. But the film definitely didn't bomb. In fact, it made more money than either Ray or Finding Neverland at the box office worldwide. And it's selling extremely well on DVD. :)

It did better than Ray and Finding Neverland? Whoa, I had no idea...and about the DVD sales, I remember (there was mist... Sorry, wrong train of thought...) that I went to get it the day it came out (of course), and right before I left, I called Best Buy and asked if they still had copies of the 2-disc version. The guy was like, "Yeah, of course...we have a bunch left."
I get there, and...they were sold out. In the twenty minutes it takes me to get to Best Buy. ::Le sigh:: Luckily, Media Play was right across the street. :D
Anyways, back to Gerry...has anybody seen Dear Frankie? It didn't come anywhere near Harrisburg, so I didn't have a chance to see it... ::Sticks pins in little voodoo dolls of various people that could be held responsible for this catastrophe:: But it comes out on DVD on the 5th, four days... ::Is wildly excited:: YAY!!

Personaly, I thought that his singing voice is better than Micheal Crawford's in somes aspects. I thought he did a good job acting out the phantom's "obsession" and his fits of anger.
I enjoyed the movie the singing and for some reason Gerry is my new obsession(actor wise).

i thought that gerard was amazingly sexy in this movie (2005 verson)
..i mean for a older man.
i liked his voice WAY MORE then i did michael crawfords..
the way they did michael crawfords make-up in the pictures and what not i have seen..was almost ridiculous but then again he wassapposed to be deformed.
emmy rossum compard to sara brightman how ever iis a fantastic singer..sara kinda has a way of hitting the notes almost like carlotta..kinda..
and u know what it all ends out to.
the phantom in the book looks nothing like the phantoms in the movies.

I just voted for Gerry as bond. Oh yeah!
*ahem* Anyway...I have only seen the movie 11 times (own it) and heard the movie soundtrack *own it* and listen to it everyday. So, personally I love Gerry as the phantom. When I read the book and see the play I don't want to let it take away from the pleasure I get from the movie. I want to treat them all as seperate creations and all important in different ways.
Gerry as phantom was good in the way that he sang emotionally and his hotness made me want to know more about his story. He may not be as good of a singer as Raoul, but I still enjoyed Gerry as Gerry. I can't imagine the phantom voice any other way. :)

I have to say that, although I really like Gerard Butler as an actor, and he did an outstanding job as Phantom, I don't quite think that he was the best choice, or best interpretation. His voice was certainly what I would picture the Phantom's voice to sound like, but in all honesty... he was way too attractive for a deformed and shunned creature! xD But he did carry himself wonderfully, and sang magestically, quite impressive for someone with such little vocal training as himself! heh.
Oh! And I'm voting alongside everybody to have our very own Gerard Butler as Mr. Bond ^-^.
