I'm not sure about everyone else, but I think this would help a lot of us.
We can have shout outs for Birthdays (for those that wish for a more public celebration), announcements or anything else that has to go to various people.
Instead of PMing every single person on the site you can just make an announcement. Mod and Admins can post messages for easier access. There could be general conversations streaming through the Shout Box as well.
It just seems like one of those 'things' that forums and communities have.
