View Full Version : How many times? [movie]

The Phantom
04-09-2005, 07:25 PM
Theres a thread like this in the Opera forum dedicated to how many times you've seen it, so there should be one for the movie as well! Credits to Carlotta Guidicelli/Heather for the original idea of the thread. The basic question is, how many times have you seen the movie? I've seen it three times, twice with large groups and once by myself when no one would want to go with me. The first time was the most special though.

The Khanum

Eight. I ran out of money and people to go with, or I would have gone more. :)

The Phantom

That's why you go to the matinee's if you are really addicted to the movie, though I forked out the more money to go at night all three times. Here, you can go to a matinee before 5 o'clock and get a movie ticket for $5.00. For after 5, its like $7.50 per ticket. Don't even get me started on the pop corn. ;)

The Khanum
04-10-2005, 04:13 AM
It was only playing in one theater around here...of course, it was the most expensive one in the area... Let me put it this way: the MATINEE tickets were $7.75. This is something a poor teenager who just quit her job cannot affort. I'm lucky I made it the eight times I went! I probably still owe some people back for buying my tickets...

The Phantom

Tickets can be expensive sometimes, I guess I should be very grateful that the matinee is as cheap as it is here in North Carolina. I'd hate to see the prices go up as much as gas has gone up... then I wouldn't be going to see Phantom as many times as I did. I can't compare my three to your eight though!

The Khanum
04-10-2005, 04:56 AM
I'm glad you have admitted defeat, monsieur... ;) Just kidding...I am quite proud of my eight viewings, though. It's a record on my part. I was going for nine (my lucky number), but during the last week of it being in my theater, it was only playing at 10:00 pm on school nights...meaning it would be over past midnight... yeah, the parental units weren't too pleased about that... ::sigh::

Only three times. I wish I could have seen it more, but I was a bit short on the cash, unfortunately. Oh well. Those three times made it even more special!!

Twice. Being 13 and with pretty strict parents, it's very hard for me to see a film more than 2 or 3 times, unless I go with mates (which is not always possible). I saw it once with my sis & mum - my sis hated it & they both thought it waaaay too long and boring. Then I went with my best mate (the only other POTO phan in my year at school) and we had the time of our lives! Unfortunatly after that it was too hard to go again, seeing as my parents refused to take me & also it was only on at late night times anyway :(

One of my good friends who is a bigger Phan than I am saw the movie five times I think, going with five different groups each time. I was suprised that Phantom stayed onto the movie theater as long as it did here, it was on until about late February when it was released January 22nd. Other places stopped showing Phantom like mid February.

Can people say that generally the first time was the most emotional, or the second and ones after?

The Khanum
04-11-2005, 10:13 PM
Probably the first was the most emotional...but I cried everytime!

The Phantom
04-11-2005, 10:41 PM
I'm not afraid to say that I'm a guy and I cried after the first movie lol. I'm emotional anyway, but during the first time I always got teary eyed during the scenes with Christine at the Daae Graveyard, and during All I ask of You with Raoul and Christine pouring their hearts out. The day I went happened to be the day my girlfriend broke up with me, so afterwards in my car I just started bawling.

cinty
04-12-2005, 05:28 AM
Actually, it was the third time that I got the most emotional. My first time I cried quite a bit, not at all the second time, and the third time, i just BAWLED!!! Right from the line "go now, go now and leave me!" until the very end of the credits, and then I ahd to force myself to stop because we were leaving.

The Khanum
04-12-2005, 12:06 PM
I haven't seen it since I read PHANTOM, so now I'm done for...I'll just be bawling the whole way through! Anytime Erik is in pain, I know the tears will start coming, because I became so emotionally attached to Erik after reading that book. ::Sigh:: Before, I started crying each time right as Christine said, "You are not alone..." Man, that line gets me every single time!

Well I've only seen the movie twice, which seems like a very pathetic number compared to eight. But botht imes were quite emotional. Actually the first time I went I dragged along one of my friends who thoguht I was insane for liking an Opera-ish musical movie. But he went with me anyway and continiously shot me "why am I here?" looks throughout the large singing portions. But even he, at the end was crying.

Then the second time I saw it with my father (it was about the first time I movie came out that he would actually take me to!) and we both cried. Though I think I only cried at the ending...more or less.

I've seen it 4 times so far. (3 for full price and 1 at the dollar theater.) Hopefully, I'll go again soon! :)

The Phantom
04-17-2005, 07:41 PM
That is the same with me, but we don't have anything called a dollar theater around here. I magine being that cheap it probably isn't that good of quality, no? But on the topic of seeing the movie... its a shame that there aren't more theaters still showing it. We need our Phantom fix before the DVD comes out. :awink:

sing_for_me
04-17-2005, 09:33 PM
I've seen it five times, the fifth two days ago at our local dollar theater. Hooray for dollar theaters!

Unfortunately, movies are only there for the weekend, so it's the last time until it comes out on DVD. It was only here in real release for a week, which is the shortest amount of time I've ever seen a movie be here. Which is strange, because when I saw it a few days ago the audience seemed to love it. Maybe they all waited until it was cheap to see. :P

On the bright side, only 16 (or 15, for UKers) days left! :mask:

Opera Ghost

Yeah the film stayed in out cinemas for a long time too - it came out very late December I think .. I saw it New Years Day. It continued to be on till the middle of February-ish..

The first time, I went with my older sister and my mum. I cried continuously from the Cemetery scene until the end of the credits. Because I can't "take sides" between Phantom & Raoul, I was upset that one of them was going to get killed in the end lol (I hadn't read the book and didn't know the story line that well)..

The second time, I went with my Phantom-mad best mate & her parents..it was great! I cried a couple of times, but not continuously. We mouthed all the song lyrics (and the spoken lines, for that matter!) but we could sing seeing as the cinema was packed! :D

The Phantom
04-22-2005, 09:26 PM
The last time I saw the movie with a few friends I did the same thing; all throughout the movie I was mouthing and singing the lyrics to the songs to my friend sitting beside me. She couldn’t stop laughing, and to make matters worse, there was a couple of pre-teens giggling and making out in the row down from us, lol.

Sweet Intoxication
04-23-2005, 12:09 AM
The first time I went, there was me and my friend, and a bunch of middle aged-relatively old people. It was crazy. Oh well actually there were a few other teens, all of which I knew from my shcool's theatre department. Then the second time I went, there was this whole group of preteens who were absolutely obnoxious....

Pfft* Too bad I only got to see it twice though...

I've seen it four times at the theater, and six times after I bought the DVD. That's only one of the reasons why I haven't been on...I've had a bunch of homework too. The school year is almost over, thank goodness!

:tp5: Aww, this little Phantom is so cute. :D

I've seen it 5 times so far ... and the dvd isn't out here yet so I can only hope that I find more small theaters that still play it !!

vergulde_draak
05-27-2005, 10:31 AM
Wow.. some of you have seen it waaayy more time than me. I only managed to watch it once in the cinemas. I almost got to watch it a 2nd time in the cinemas but the timing was too late and my friend and I decided to forgo it. So the 2nd time I watched it was using a bootlog version, that was terrible quality, while doing my assignments. And now that I have the DVD, I watch it as many times as possible. And the bootleg version is somewhere in my drawers, hidden by a huge mess of backup CDs.

Countess Cain
05-27-2005, 01:21 PM
I never got to see it in theaters... Mainly because both the movie theaters here are pretty stupid. :/ One didn't play it at all, and the other played it for two weeks... When I was like, owing someone money. x_x; So eh, it didn't work out as far as that goes.

And I've seen it twice on DVD. D: Pathetic, right?

I magine being that cheap it probably isn't that good of quality, no?

It's usually not that bad. It's cheap usually because the movie's been out for a while, and a lot of people have already seen it, so the money-making's gone down... And it's cheaper. *Shrug.* They're nifty, but there's not one here.

The Khanum
06-02-2005, 01:16 AM
Hmm...I saw it eight times in the theaters (I know, I already posted that...), but now that I have it on DVD, I've lost count. I think I'm up to twenty-four...twenty-five? Thirty, perhaps?

I have no idea. It's a lot, though.

I saw it twice in the theater, once with my mom and sister, once will my aunts, cousins, grandma, etc. We all loved it.

On DVD... I have no idea. The first week I had it, I think I watched it every day. I've also watched it in French, which was fun. You should try it. :)

I never saw it in the theater, but i watch it at least three times a week, so i've seen it about twelve times. I suppose that's not very often, but i'm still new at PoTO, so i'm working on it. I'm going to watch it more though, so we'll see in about a month :D

I think I'm going to update how many times I've seen it lol. Every chance that I get I watch the DVD, and I even try to get my friends to see it. I guess I've seen the movie after it came out on DVD about 8 times, including my times in the movie theater.

This might be scary but..... I have seen it so many times that I have lost count! I watch it pretty much everyday and listen to it in the background when I am doing chores or school work. I just can't get enough of the music and how much the Phantom loves Christine. I have seen it so much that I don't watch the entire movie but only go to my favorite parts. I wouldn't say I'm obsessed but pretty close to it! LOL

Let's see... I saw it three times in the regularly priced theater, twice in the dollar theater, and I've lost count of how many times I've watched at least part of my DVD. And when I'm not watching to it, I'm listening to the soundtrack, or one of my cast recordings. I'm an addict, and proud of it! :mask:

Well, I'm new and it is good to know that I am not the only one with need for a phantom fix daily. I drive my husband crazy now that I own the movie. I just adore Gerard Butler and can't help but stare in amazement when he cries. I can't think of anyone that could have conveyed the emotion as well as he did. I can't tell you how many times I have watched the movie, probably about 30 times. And like others, I turn it on just to hear the music while I clean house. Big Phantom Phan.... Brandie

I've been watching it at least once a day, if not more lately. One day, I did nothing but watch it, resulting in 11 times. My mama yelled at me for it too, saying I was hogging the TV, but the TV that's in our living room was MY CHRISTMAS PRESENT.

Sorry. Anyway, I think I'm up to about sixty-something, and if you count my On Demand start, I'm well into the seventies.

Well, i never saw phantom in theatres, i actually didnt want to, it didnt look interesting to me. but my friend did, and fell in love with it. she started singing AOM all the time at school, so i learned it that way and sang with her all the time. then she let me borrow the soundtrack, and i didnt understand the storyline, so one night i went out and rented it. i fell in love with it instantly, and ordered it on PPv and tivo'd it. but then someone erased it off the tivo, so i had to but the dvd. ive watched it well over 60 times now. and i really regret not seeing it in the theatres

So many times I don't even know where to begin. I've started noticing things, too, that I've failed to see over the millions of times. It will be the first time I watch it with such a system, I really can't wait. I thought the sound was good already in stereo, but could've been better, you definitely hear it's a movie for a surround system

But can anyone explain to me why this movie got such bad reviews in the media?? I don't understand. To me it became my favourite movie in no-time....
Is it because it's not like 'Moulin Rouge'? (luckily, although I love it as well). Phantom is not that fast, it's more intimate and into the music. Moulin Rouge I had to watch twice, Phantom hit me totally the first time I saw it.

I'm sorry if this is kinda off-topic, I don't know if there has already been discussions about this, or where to post it otherwise.

Yes I know what you mean! I looked up the reviews and most of them seemed to be putting down the film. However there were one or two that said it was amazing! I think the acting is done so well and the cinematography is perfect! ...and the music cant be the reason for the bad reviews, because after all TPOTO is like the most popular musical ever...

I totally agree. The only reason I can think of, is that's is a story which suits you, or does not. It's controversial in a certain way, and it's kinda gothic/barock. But that does not explain why it's the most popular musical ever, as you just said....

TeeJay

Ye. I guess maybe the gothic storyline scared a few people away. I personally think its exciting, but thats not really the main reason why I like POTO so much.

Oh man... this is my thead haha XD. My cousin works at a movie theater, so we get free tickets. Since she works there though, I spend much of my time there, and therefore I know all the laboring force therein. Soooo, whenever I feel like going to the movies I just walk in without buying a ticket! XD So, naturally, I've seen the movie more times that it is healthy. Aside from seeing it repeatedly on the movie theater, I've seen it almost every time I have spare time on DVD.

Talk about obsessiveness.

I think I've watched the movie like, 20 times... or more. I lost the count actually. It happens when you become a "little" bit obsessed... :D And I'm with Ceridwen as well, I can't stop listening to the soundtrack. I think my CDs will disintegrate any time soon... not good.

A "little"....only a "little"...of course :D :D
I know about the cd's, it's terrible. You know, with the old longplay records you could actually listen to them way to many times and they would scratch and stuff... with cd's, that's normally out of the question, but I'm not too sure about it, having in mind the frequency at which I listen to them :D

For the past month, I've been fasting from this film completely - no watching trailers, looking at screencaps (unless they're in someone's sig or avatar), listening to the soundtrack, or even thinking about it if I can help it. That way, I can be fresh and ready to watch it again on the 22nd, the anniversary of the day it came out in the U.S. :D Yes, I'm crazy like that.

Ouch. That seriously sucks! I've never loaned my DVD to anyone (except that time when I let my English teacher see disc 2 for one weekend). I tell all my phriends to either watch it at my house or get their own, because I'm never going to risk my copy getting damaged or lost. Yeah, I'm paranoid. ;)

I was crushed that I couldn't see POTO on the big screen so I settled with watching the DVD when my mom rented it.

She now regrets bringing it home :D and whenever she yells at me phor my obsession I just say, "It's your phault that I'm like this!" she yells, "HOW?!" and I simply respond, "YOU BROUGHT IT HOME PHOR ME!!!!!!" and that shuts her up lol.

I've seen the movie countless times! Sadly not on stage yet. :( Any one know if it's ever gonna come back to Toronto? lol.

Twice in the theater, and too many times at home to count. I would say probably about... fifty or so, I don't know. I'm not completely obsessive, because I divide my time between many activities, but still pretty crazy. :)

I saw the movie three times, but, like Steve, the first time was the most special for me, because it truly made an impact on me. The second and third time I could observe the details though, so I enjoyed it very much as well. :) I have seen the movie with a couple of friends every time, because we were all very much looking forward to this new movie.

Heh, I haven't seen it very many times due to the fact that when it was in theatres I was either in school or working and couldn't get a ride to see it. :( However, I recently had the chance to see the movie! Yay!

So yeah - right now my count is up to 2 whole times! Like I said, not a lot, though I've heard the songs about 1 million times seeing as I *cough* downloaded them. Heh. Sarah made me watch the film, and I love her for it! Now if only I can steal that from her so I can watch it at home too...

Hahaha, yeah., keep dreaming Rachey!

Actually, when it came top theaters I wanted to go see it, but like others I couldn't find a way to get there, life gets in the way and of course, all that jazz... So a few weeks ago it was on the Movie Netowrk, so I watched it!! So glad I chanced upon that! So after that, I loved it, songs stuck in head, everything!

So I kept an eye out to see if they were going to play it agin, and they didn't. So fed up and as impatient as I am, I went to Blockbuster and bought it! And then I made Rachey watch it with me! :D So now I've seen it twice... btu I will be seeing it more more... hahaha! I wuv it... And yeah... I've heard the songs millions of times in my mind and I just sort of chanced upon them every so often on this wonderful thing called the internet. ;)

Of course... there are many phans here to keep moi happy! :)

lol.....All of you will prolly think I am completely out of my mind, but, I recieved the movie a year ago for Mother's Day...never seen it in the Movie theater...and I KNOW that between May and September of last year, and my cousin helped me calculate this, I had seen it about 200ish times...and I am not joking....so that means to date...250ish times....

I know...I need a life....The problem was that the DVD has an auto repeat, so if I left the DVD in and not mess with it, when the movie is over and returns to the main menu screen and that is left alone for about 30 sec, I think, the movie starts to play again.

I am a stay at home mom, so, while doing housework or putzing around the house, PotO was always on. Where's my husband, you ask? always at work.... lol

Thats how I got all of my children, even my teenage cousin, addicted to it too!!!

Lost count a while back. I watch it about once a week. While I'm in school, I'll watch it before I go to bed on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday (I pause it before I fall asleep each night!). But now that I'm on summer break, I watch it while I clean house. So I don't know how many times I've seen it, according to my mom (who rather dislikes it) too many times... Oh well, I'm hopelessly devoted to Erik...<3 <3

I didn't go see it at the movies because my lame city didn't get the movie in our theaters until my birthday which then I couldn't see it because I was busy and then like 2 days later it wasn't there.

But I have seen it 2 times. The first time I started watching it and I didn't really care for it (that's why you shouldn't watch movies while you have a headache) and then the 2nd time I saw it, I fell in love with the movie.

I can match MTM! It didn't play theaters here, but, thanks to movie channels and free On Demand, I've hit close to 70 times. With On Demand, I stayed up and watched it sometimes three times in a row as I worked on the story forum and answered PMs. I have it on tape, so it shouldn't take long to hit 100 times I'd imagine.

Of course, POTO isn't the only film I've watched MANY times. I started multi-views back in the Sixties, before most people considered going to a movie more than once! We had no idea that there someday would be such a thing as cable and movie channels!

Yes, I know I showed my age! I'm a Baby Boomer and very proud of it!

I am sorry, I can't count that high. :) No, but it has been a lot. I saw it three times in the theater and I was the first to buy it at the Walmart at midnight. I went home and watched it. For a long time, because it was summer, I would wake up, turn it on and stick it on repeat and it would play all day. I would fall asleep to it, my mom would come in and cut it off and then i would turn it on again when I woke up. I have had three different discs because they all started skipping from watching them. Needless to say, I stopped counting at 150 and that was the beginning of last year...2006. So, that number has gone up a substantial amount.

I have both the full screen and Widescreen versions. I have yet to get the two disk version, but I plan to if I can find it.

On my full screen verion, there is a very slight scratch from watching it so much, that when "old Raoul" is watching the young couple, my DVD pauses on the old man for longer than it needs to and its a litle distracting and a little funny. Its also a little bit longer than it should be. While it is paused on him, the clock-timer-thingy that tells you how long you've been watching the DVD continues going while the movie is stopped.

*Snickering* I am watching it now. :) I had a widescreen version and then my uncle gave me the fullscreen version for Christmas cause I told him mine wouldn't play anymore. Then, I went to buy another one cause that one stopped working and it just happened to be the two disc. You have to get it, Christina....it is amazing. And luckily, it still plays perfect. I had to search everywhere for it though. I finally found it at Target.

I don't actually know how many times I've seen it. Ballpark would be around thirty times. It probably would have been more if it wasn't for the fact that I feared for the life of my DVD. It is so worn, I'm afraid every time I watch it will be its last.
