4. One of my greatest pet peeves is plagiarism. It's lazy, disreputable, and creates too much controversy, especially when you work for one of the most read newspapers in the United States.
5. When I was 15, I had a dream of becoming a famous mystery writer with a large house. An enormous wing would have been devoted to books in the style of a 19th century personal library.
6. Sometimes, I feel guilty when I date. It is irrational, I know, since Jonathan has been dead almost four years, but the feeling is there nevertheless. This is why I don't date very often.
7. I dislike many of the men on the New York Times board of directors. As cliche as it may sound, they are pompous pigs.
8. There are times when I wish I wasn't Editor-in-Chief. I should have chosen a less stressful path.
9. I love stress - and yet I despise it. The relationship is complicated.
10. I take my coffee black.
11. I might maintain that I dislike skirts and dresses because they feel constricting... But I can't help feeling like a girl sometimes and absolutely adoring wearing skirts and dresses. A woman needs to feel pretty once in a while.
12. In the lower desk drawer in my New York office, I have a picture of my family in the days when we were whole. I refer to it rarely.
13. My favorite drink is a flavorful, whispy red wine.
14. I have had episodes of insomnia. It's quite frustrating.
15. I have contemplated suicide more than once - sometimes in jest, mostly in seriousness. Thank God I've talked myself out of it so far.
16. When I was younger, I was slightly embarrassed about the fact that I was "half white" and "half Chinese." I remember being teased by a caucasian boy in 3rd grade. I bursted into tears.
17. Rooftops are a favorite location of mine. Looking out across a city and into the horizon can be very soothing.
18. My phone almost never leaves my side. However, I am courteous. I won't pull it out in the midst of a conversation with someone else. That is another one of my pet peeves.
19. No matter how confident I try or appear to be, there are times when I feel self-conscious about my appearance and my reputation. I am human, not a machine.
20. I dislike romantic comedies. There are very few decent ones. All the rest have tired out, predictable, unsatisfyingly unrealistic plotlines.
21. I am a closet alcoholic, but I never let it interfere with my job.
22. I have always wanted a dog, but I've never gotten around to getting one.
23. Even though my life is hectic and I have little time even for myself, I very sorrowfully wish I had children.
24. One of my favorite novels is Atonement by Ian McEwan.
25. The end of The Notebook didn't make me cry.

1. When I was little I read The Portrait of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde. I couldn't sleep for a week, and still have nightmares about it now and then.
2. I have been known to burn water.
3. My favorite "food" is hotdogs. All good French people may hang their heads in shame now.
4. I have a stuffed hippo that I've had since I was six. His name is Monsieur Popotam. Yes, I named a hippo "Mr. Hippo."
5. I learned to cuss when I was eight years old, backstage during one of my mother's performances, from one of the stagehands. God bless that man.
6. I can hold a (rather grammatically incorrect) conversation in German. Great language for yelling in.
7. Wet paint is my least favorite smell in the world.
8. My favorite book of all time is The Princess Bride. Damn good movie, too.
9. My favorite movie is Bram Stoker's Drakula, though the old Godzilla movies have a special place in my heart.
10. I read Victor Hugo's Les Miserables cover-to-cover and liked it.
11. When I was very little, I was terrified of horses.
12. Nails on a chalkboard is the sound of my personal Hell.
13. While Les Mis will always have a place in my heart, my favorite musical will always be Cabaret.
14. My arms and legs are covered with tiny scars from when my cat, Hugo, was a kitten.
15. Speaking of Hugo, all the dogs in the neighborhood are terrified of him.
16. In 9th grade, I shaved my head. Something about non-conformity and being an individual and the like. I honestly can't remember my reasoning.
17. Once a year I try to visit Oscar Wilde's grave, read some of his poems, and leave flowers if I can.
18. I'm something of a master at arcade crane machines.
19. I have read all of the Harry Potter books, and even attended a couple midnight releases. They were fun.
20. I'd quite like to get married one day, but I'm fairly sure that the man who would put up with me doesn't exist. Besides, I'd be a horrible wife.
21. When I first joined the Paris Opera, I was actually a little worried about running into the ghost. Now I'm a bit disappointed that I haven't, yet.
22. I saw each of the Lord of the Rings movies twice while they were still in theaters.
23. My favorite drink is mint tea with honey. I have a special mug for it at home and everything.
24. I've carried a can of mace in my purse since I was ten. It's more of out of habit now than actual fear.
25. I've actually had the privilege of using "a homeless man stole my backpack" as an honest excuse for not having my homework.

25 Things You Didn’t Know About Pieter Lachen
1. I love bratwurst, kartoffelsalat, German chocolate cake and all of the rich foods my mother used to make. I eat them rarely because professionally I know that it is ridiculously unhealthy and personally I know that once I start I can’t stop.
2. I took steroids regularly from the time I was 13 until I was 16. Knowing what I do now I am utterly not proud of this fact. But at the time they were given to me by my Coach and asking questions was not an option.
3. I sometimes fear my own strength. I laugh most things off not only because after all I’ve seen in life so few things seem as dire as they do to most people, but also because I’m honestly afraid of what I might be capable of if I were to allow myself to get too angry.
4. I am very self-conscious about my size sometimes. I understand that everyone has those moments when they wish they could “just disappear”. That is almost literally impossible for me. I am, of course, used to it by now. But that doesn’t mean I’m not more than averagely aware of the way I stick out in most crowds.
5. I cannot cook to save my life. The microwave is the only appliance in my kitchen that ever sees any use.
6. I always wished that I had had a brother or sister. My mother and her brothers were so close that it made me envious.
7. I have been engaged three times. The first time I was 16. It was a relationship “encouraged” by the authorities of the Sportvereinigung. She was a gymnast named Svetlana. Basically I realized later that my first love was little more than a PR stunt that I was unwittingly a party to. I thought I loved her, but the day I “left” East Germany she publicly denounced me.
8. The second time I asked a woman to marry me was Clara, who met in medical school. She and I spilt amicably when she realized that I wasn’t going to stop doing the things I did for underground movements in the Cold War. We still exchange Christmas cards every year.
9. My third fiancé, and the standard by which I unwittingly judge all relationships, was Lena. She was an art thief. She specialized in art stolen by Nazis during WWII. I met her through my Uncle’s black market connections. She was killed during a heist three months before we were supposed to be married.
10. I know nothing of art except what Lena and my best friend have taught me. When I acquired a little bit of wealth (and with some help of family and friends) I purchased legally the piece of art Lena died trying to steal and donated it back to the family it was originally taken from. Two years ago the old woman, who was a child during WWII, passed away and left it to me in her will. It hangs on my bedroom wall.
11. I always thought I would have loved to be a father. But the thought terrifies me as well. I never had the traditional father figure in my life. The closest I’ve ever had is my godson, which is perhaps why I spoil him so much.
12. Though I was a teenager when I met my Uncles for the first time I consider myself “raised” by them. They were very varied role models. Warrin, with his wife Eva, let me live with them in Hamburg. He was an accountant and also ran numbers for my Uncle Günter. Günter was a rough and tumble bachelor in Berlin who had his fingers in any illegal activity he get them into. My Uncle Steffen, who resides in Munich, was an artist and part time forger who still lives happily with his partner of thirty years, Klaus.
13. I sometimes still deeply regret that I never had the chance to compete in the Olympics. Almost forty years later I still wonder if I really could have won gold.
14. I didn’t become a doctor because of some righteous desire to save lives. I went into medicine at first because of my fascination in anatomy from my years of weight training and wanted to learn the physiology behind all of the muscle groups and such that I had spent most of my life to that point obsessing about. (The desire to save lives came later.)
15. On the rare occasion I get to take a vacation I like going someplace cold. Keep the beach. I prefer snow, a ski lodge, a roaring fire, a hot beverage, and a good book.
16. I love sport. But watching it on the television makes me restless and want to move so I never watch it for very long.
17. The only ornament on my mantle is a hunk of concrete splattered with spray paint. It is a piece of the Berlin Wall that I ripped out with my own hands as students tore it down with sledgehammers.
18. To this day I’m not entirely sure how but I managed to cross in and out of East Germany three times during my med school days without being caught or recognized.
19. I am ambidextrous. But what they say about doctors is unfortunately true in my case and though my handwriting is only slightly better with my right hand, they are both fairly illegible.
20. I have never in my life owned a car. I’ve always lived in large enough cities that I didn’t need one to get around or known people who would loan me theirs.
21. Though I’ve never owned a car I do have a fascination with motorbikes. My Uncle Gunther had one when I was 21 that I used to take on long drives through the country to clear my head. There’s something about the speed and open air that is intoxicating.
22. I can’t stand wine. Especially “dry red”. Who wants to drink a beverage that makes your mouth more dry than before you took a sip? Give me a beer any day.
23. In school I was required to learn two languages besides my native German and one of them had to be English. I chose French for the other. But I also speak Russian, a side effect of my coaches in East Germany. I use it very rarely as it conjures more than a few bad memories.
24. Before my mother died I took her 13 times to the Opera. Sometimes we travelled for hours just to find one we hadn’t seen already. She taught me the appreciation of the art and I’m happy to say I filled her final days with as much of it as I humanly could.
25. My mother taught me a love and appreciation of Opera. My best friend taught me the joy of jazz. My godson showed me the glory of classic rock. But my favorite kind of guilty pleasure music is 80’s rap and hard rock. Big hair bands. Anything with a hard thumping beat. It was the first sort of music I discovered after I left East Germany and it remains a perpetual favorite.
