View Full Version : Patrick Wilson [Raoul]
The Phantom

Discussion on the actor Patrick Wilson who starred as Raoul in the movie is here. I liked Patrick's portrayal of Raoul, I thought he did a good job as him with his singing and all. He gave Raoul a young, innocent feeling of a young man in love with a woman that he almost lost. What do you guys think of him? Good, bad, no comments at all?

Oh man I just loved Patrick, his voice is so beautiful! His All I ask of you is so lovely. He had a great vocal range too. Hey, he's also really handsome.

He played the role perfetly and was the best Raoul I think.

I do like Patrick's portryal of Raoul, he put so much emotion into it which, for me made Raoul likeable. I mean I am a die hard Erik/Christine fan but I don't dislike Raoul for it in the movie because you almost felt sorry for him when he was tied up on the portculis :P Plus, he is a very good singer :D

I think Patrick's voice was a bit too weak in places for my liking to be honest, and sometimes Raoul did come across as a bit of a fop. But some of his acting was very sweet.

^Stole the words right out of my mouth. ;)
His voice seems very weak, compared to Gerard's or Emmy's. But the point of no return had a few measures in it that he performed well. My biggest problem being that 'pretty-boy' factor seemed a little over done.

For someone who is very accustomed to the broadway version, I have to agree that his voice was a little weak especially in comparison to Emmys. They also did overdo the pretty boy routine way to much it kinda annoyed me by the end.

I at first didn't like his long and well groomed hair, he looked too much of a girl. Maybe also because I like guys with shorter hair than that.
My favourite Patrick scene though is the dungeon scene where he tries to rescue Christine. He looks so sexy with his hair all wet and the upset look on his face.

I strongly (strongly!) dislike the character of Raoul...but Patrick did a beautiful job portraying him. I admire and respect him as an actor, and I'll make a point to go see his other films.
I must disagree with my fellow phans Cecile and Carlotta (but good-naturedly, of course!:D) Though it pains me to say this, I think he had one of the strongest voices in the cast (I say it pains me because Raoul just shouldn't have a sexy voice! He's not supposed to be sexy!). He and Christine (Emmy Rossum) are superb singers, as is Gerry...but Gerry is not classically trained, and at some points you can sort of tell. But he still did a fantastic job...Gerry was, in my opinion, the strongest portrayal, acting wise.
Now...back to Patrick Wilson... (sorry, I can get sort of carried away while talking about Gerry...)
Patrick Wilson did very well as the "old childhood friend," and he was convincing as a "hero" figure. Though I hold a major grudge against Raoul himself, I think Patrick is a wonderful actor.

I thought Patrick Wilson did a great job as Raoul. He had a very nice, comforting voice, and was a pretty good actor. (Raoul generally doesn't get to do much real "acting," so that's saying something.) I'm used to Raoul being a baritone, so the first time I heard his voice, I was thrown off a bit (since Pat's a tenor), but I thought his singing was excellent. I still don't think he should have won the swordfight, though. Then again, it gives Gerik even more reason to want to kill him. :D

I think Patricks voice is strong. I also think he brought across the "prince charming" element awesomely. To tell the truth right now I am as in love with him as I am with Gerry. :D

*Sigh* I love Patrick. I thought his portrayal of Raoul was the most spot-on performance in the film. His voice was good - not great, but good. It wasn't strong, but it was soothing and low and quite sexy ;). His hair may have made him seem like a bit of a poncy fecker, but damn he was a beautiful one...
I know it is the Phantom who is meant to be the sexy and mysterious character of the movie, but seriously, I thought Raoul outshone him! He was exactly as he should have been, really, but he added his own dashing touch to it that was really appealing (for me, anyways)... And that scene when he was tied to the Phantom's portcullis (Shut up Hollie! :p), he just looked so dejected and beaten and sexy!

Yes well, Patrick is a foxy moron, no doubt about it ;). Mmm, I did indeed find him very darn sexy... he had such a lovely smooth and quiet voice, and the most beautiful smile. Patrick still looks good out of costume too, I reckon. Well, he's without the Raoul mullet, so what can you expect?
That end scene is just.... oooh, the best one in the film? My friend and I were perving so badly on Patrick the other day... and his tousled, wet hair... and his strategically white, see-though shirt... and his only-noticeable-if-you're-a-total-pervert wet-shirt covered nipple! YES we were looking, LOL!! *Looks around* That's just very tragic really, isn't it?
Angel of Music: No wonder you found him especially attractive in that last scene, mate... he's wet and messy and tied to a portcullis! :p
And goddamn I'm gonna shut up now before I get myself totally banned for being too perverted.

What? *looks innocent* I thought he looked sexy in that scene too. Why did you think I made you screencap that scene for me? I think that scene made him stand out more than any other scene that he was in during the film.

Don't worry you won't be the only one who probably would be. I reckon Steve will kick us out before we could shout "CHRISTINE!"
In our no so stage voices, which Patrick Wilson had a great voice.
In Behind the Mask, Joel the director said Raoul was the first person they cast for the movie because they knew how brilliant Patrick Wilson was for the part. I don't think he'd be able to do the dark and mysterious act and be a Phantom.

Actually, I think Patrick would make a good Phantom. He is definitely more the 'Raoul' but he has the voice for the Phantom, I think. And heaps of actos have gone from playing Raoul to playing Erik. (Steve Barton, Hugh Panaro, among quite a few others.)

I really liked him as Raoul. I remember seeing the musical and not liking Raoul, but I liked him in this movie.
He sang very well, and just looked the part fully. I loved him at the end when he was all tired up. Although I almost started laughing at his expression when Phantom pulls the rope to tighten it...but I have a weird sense of humor.

OMG has anyone watched Patrick in anything other than Phantom of the Opera? Well, I went out and bought Angels in America and The Alamo just for him (of course) and well
let me just say that compared to Phantom, Patricks role in Angels in America is rather complex and
erm, different.
Hes fantastic in it (of course), and you see much more of him (in more ways than one ;)), because his acting talents are really put to the test. In short, he plays a selfish, confused gay Mormon pulled every which way by temptation and his own morals. Hes in trouble from the start, because he leads a very lonely, desolate life with his valium-addicted wife while struggling with his own sexuality. I know it sounds vindictive, but I was happy when his wife left him at the end
he got what he deserved, it was only when he said Dont leave me
youre my better heart
the only person who loves me, that I was slightly sympathetic. And I mean slightly.
In The Alamo, his character was much straighter (meaning less complex and stuffed up as well as not gay). He played a slightly dandy general who was defending the Alamo and in fact (heres a spoiler), he doesnt make it. It was the first scene I watched, (because I usually dont watch anything from the start, I watch it in random chapters), and he got a bullet through his head. I wasnt all that keen on watching the rest of it after that but, you know, I did.
So there we have it. These two films are actually the only other two he has done next to the Phantom apart from My Sisters Wedding. Hes really just a relative new-comer in the movie industry. Id say (personally) that Patrick looks the least hot in Phantom (ok, Ill admit now that the mullet really isnt him), and probably the best in Angels
his pecks are just noice.

Oh, it's not really a mullet. It's long everywhere, not just in the back. Give him a little credit, will you? :D
I thought he did pretty well. He wasn't the best Raoul I've heard, but he definately wasn't the worst. I thought he did wonderfully on most of his singing, but I do agree that it seemed a bit weak at times.

I hated Patrick Wilson's portrayal of raoul at first, basically I hated everything Raoul related, but I've gone far more tollerant.
I also hated his voice, but now I think he sings very good, I love it on the special feautures of the dvd when he sings primadonna, that's very good.
But I still don't like his portrayal very much I think he's a bit too arrogant and annoying, but my opinion about Patrick Wilson has very much been improved.
I love him in angels in america, I think he is wonderful in that role, I liked him more as Joe than as Raoul.

I thought he did pretty well in the role, when comparing him to the other Raouls I've heard on my CDs. I, for one, still couldn't help but not hate him at the end, unlike the many that do. (Wow, tha was a horrible sentence...) He's got a stronger voice that Gerard Butler does, I know that for sure.
Looks-wise... He does look pretty good. I don't mind the long hair either. I can't stand the whole 'fop' thing that I think started because of him, though.

I've only seen the new movie version of POTO, so are we supposed to hate Raoul? Because I didn't hate him at all! lol I was actually rooting for him and Christine! And yes, Patrick is unbelievably sexy and has got a really good voice. His voice was not the strongest voice of the cast, but it was definitely very good.

Patrick Wilson was actually my favourite part of the whole movie. His ending scene while tied to the portcullis made the watching worth-while for me. The rest - Emmy, Gerard, meh, just didn't cut it. In fact, I really hated Gerard's performance. His singing voice was... well, I think I've said enough already for all the Gerard fans in the world to hate me, so why say more?
By the way... for anyone who didn't know, and who may care, Patrick Wilson is now officially a married man. So hands off, girls ;). Yeh, I'm serious, I'm not making some funny joke that he's married to me or anything, because he aint. I think he's married the lady from Count of Monte Cristo or sommat. Could be mistaken, but yeh, I don't think I am.

I think whether Raoul is to be loved or hated is ultimately up to your individual tastes. I think he's a good character, and am sick of all the Raoul-bashing that goes on. I still think Erik deserved Christine more than he did, but I don't hate him because of that. After all, he can't help being in love with Christine any more than Erik can. I definitely loved Patrick's portrayal of him as well. :)

Patrick's voice is easily the best out of the whole cast. He was a trained professional singer. I love his voice, it's really really beautiful. I personally think Patrick would make a far better Phantom than Gerry did. But anyway.

Interesting thought...he could be a cool phantom in that it would be nice to hear his voice a lot more....but I don't know if it would have fit.
Erik= more gruff voice
Raoul=beautiful voice
Seems to fit a little better.
When I listened to the Sarah Brightman version (please don't kill me those who think it's genius) I felt the phantom had a lack of passion and his voice was too high to really fit the "scary phantom" part... (though Gerry's looks are far from scary) So the phantom kinda ruined it for me there.

08-08-2005, 03:13 PM
yes, but why would an Angel of Music sound scary??? IMO, wouldn't an angel sound like.. an angel? Not like a Scottish actor who can't sing so the girls will all drool over him? Michael Crawford does have a high voice and it's absolutely beautiful for the role. He sounds about as close to an Angel of Music as you will get. The Phantom is not meant to sound scary or forceful except at certain parts, ie. All I ask of You reprise and Down Once More. Listen to the full soundtrack, and hear the anger and emotion he puts into those songs.
Lol, sorry, I respect your opinion, but I am just a huge MC fan. :P

Now, before you all spazz out that I, of all people, am posting here, this isn't about Patrick's portrayal of Raoul.
I have a new-found respect and even admiration for Patrick Wilson. I recently saw a trailer for a movie playing at the Sundance Film Festival, and I was blown away by it. The movie is called "Hard Candy," and Wilson stars as a 32-year-old photographer who stalks young girls via internet chat rooms. The film won Sundance's Official Selection for 2005.
Quite frankly, it takes balls as an actor to take on a project so graphic and controversial. I applaud him. Also, the movie itself looks really good. I really want to see it. For anyone interested, here's the trailer (http://hardcandymovie.com/).

Wow, KT, I saw the trailer for "Hard Candy" and it completely freaked me out. Except I think I was more scared of the girl than of Patrick's char...he seems quite nice...you know, except for the whole stalker/porno thing. The girl was quite scary near the end, she actually seemed like the bad guy for a second and I was like O_O;;
Haha, look at me rambling. I really want to see this now.

I thought that Patrick did a fabulous job portraying Raoul (and i dont even like Raoul). He managed to pull off pretty boy in Leroux version, but added some actual depth and manliness to the character. His voice is also a big bonus and blended very well with Emmy's but provided the improtant differnce between Raoul and Erik's sound.

I met Patrick about a year and a half ago. He's a lot better looking in person and definitely not a "pretty boy." Just a really nice, handsome youngish man.
He only came across as a bit of a pretty boy in film because of that badly designed wig. Gerard Butler would have looked foppish and silly in that wig, too...anyone would.

You met Patrick Wilson??????!!!!!!!!! I would kill to be you a year and a half ago!!!! Patrick Wilson has an amazing voice and I don't think they could have cast better.
Fiona, just as Paula said, ANYONE would look like afop in that wig. Raoul isn't a fop, and Patrick most certainly is not. Just because someone takes pride in one's appearance does not by any means make them a pretty-boy. If you have long hair, it doesn't make you a pretty boy. my boyfriend has long-ish hair and he is in noway fopish.
But anyways, Patrick Wilson suits the part. I know he is talented, but at the same time he will do anything for the ones he loves, and to top it all off, he is rich like Raoul.
Not only does Patrick Wilson have the prettiest eyes eer, he is just downright a great person.

Alright, Chrissy we get it...you're gonna kill Patrick's wife and take her place during the still of the night...heh! JK! let's think...you're as bad as Maria is when it comes to Maria and Gerry! Don't get me started with the story...if u wanna know just ask! with what happened when Maria met Gerry?
Anyways, about wilson, interesting voice, just a bit too young for my taste (my taste!)...he was good in acting thoughts...that wig did scare me...it bounces!!!!! like my hair! (when it was that long) anyways, it's really funny how people judge actors by how they look. When Maria first heard of Gerry she saw him as Darcula...heh! he looked like Jack from PotC! hehe! really he did!
PS: (nice eyes?) that's totallyyyyy!!!! Chrissy!!!!!!!!!!! hehe! and Gerry's eyes make me fall into the ocean, which his eyes are the ocean (they're that blue and big) that's just totally me!
And, "I'm gonna get him whether I died, he's married to someone else, or someone shots me...I'm still gonna get him!" that's just totally Maria!

Speaking of which, I did have a thought yesterday about it. Do you think that ALW purposly set up Raoul to be some kind of prissy? Think about it. He could have had the sequel in mind then and there have been rumors going around that the ending will turn up E/C so do you think that ALW was intentionally marring Raoul's original character with the wig so there would be more people open to E/C (ergo more $ for the sequel). Perhaps he did, perhaps he did not but if Raoul's supposed to be the good guy everyone loves, why make him look like a fool?

I agree that PW has a great voice well-suited to the part...but he came across in some scenes as rather wooden to me. Like not much feeling, as if he was reading cue cards rather than singing. If you could combine GB's obvious feel for his role with PW's technically perfect voice then you'd have a star worthy of playing either Raoul or Erik.
Just my thoughts.

That was a wig. If you look carefully during one of the behind-the-scenes interviews on the special edition of the DVD, there is a wig on a dummy head during a segment with someone from the make-up or such crew and it is Patrick's Raoul wig.
Most everyone wore wigs for the film.

Yep, it was a wig, check his fansites, ladies (some of which I am a frequent visitor of, guilty as charged)! Y'all are right as rain. It was a wig. And what a rediculous wig it was!
He's an amazing actor. I saw him in Passangers recently and though I didn't care for the movie, his acting was very real, very very very very good.
And if you've ever seen him in a stage musical, you'll see he really gets into the character and is really a wondeful actor.
But he said so himself that filming a musical was waaay different than filming a non-singing movie or doing a broadway play. He wasn't out of his legue (and the singing part was rather very easy for him), it was just a different, a bit of a difficult experience for him. It seemed almost like, vocally, and emotionally and facially he was there, in character and Raoul-like. But sometimes, his eyes seemed to wander, almost like he was bored, he knew it so well he wasn't thinking about it at all. Am I making sense?
And he's still my favorite Raoul *hugs Patrick Wilson*.

I think the only problem with him being in the film was that he was a stage actor. Don't get me wrong, I love stage actors. I mean, take a look at Julie Andrews, she won an Oscar for God's sake. The hard part is that often with actors who are more associated with the stage rather than film, it's not that they're in the wrong movie, but perhaps more with the wrong cast. I think this was the case with Patrick. He wasn't able to shine through with his real colors because many of the other actors did not shine as bright, or at least the same way he did. Am I making any sense?
EDIT: Oh! 777 posts! That's lucky!

I think I agree with you. The idea that ALW or Schumacher or SOMEONE on the POM train made "alterations" to Raoul's character in the '04 film is definitely plausible. I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but it only makes logical, marketing sense. If POM makes Erik out to be the hero and Raoul out to be... not the villain, but definitely not the hero... What better way than to malign his character by making him look like he's potentially the wrong man for Christine?
Although, admittedly, I think that kinda backfired in its way when they selected Patrick Wilson. Very few broadway critics that I've heard care for Gerry's voice-- and even fewer (if any) prefer it to Patrick's. Further more, even with the annoying wig, Patrick was able to portray Raoul as a tender, caring guy, with a heroic (if slightly short-sighted) streak. And, honestly, even with the weird hairdo, I still think Patrick is more attractive than Gerard. I always have.

His voice I adore. HE was the second Raoul that got me to like the character. *Steve Barton has mad skill just in convincing me ;)*
I agree his wig was crazy, but his face fit perfect and slightly better than Steve for his youth and flawless appearance. Hid acting was good, but the final scene is something that I just can't really understand. His voice says he's completely there, but his emotion and facial expression is slightly difference. IT just was flatly frightened, but that's it.

It was a wig?! :o
Anyways, I LOVE Patrick's voice and, personally, I think he's the best singer on the soundtrack. Except Minnie Driver, of course. (Love her)
Anyways, I actually rp Raoul on myspace and I keep wanting to put the pics of Raoul being wet in the dungeons. Tehehehe. I'm trying to find more pics of PW with cropped hair because of the fact that I'm playing both the young Raoul and the older Raoul.

Of course it was a wig! ... Ok fine at first I was thought it was his real hair for the a minute or so.
But I, too, adore Patrick's voice! It's quite beautiful and it's what makes him charming (at least in my opinion)! Too bad if I say that at school or to my mother or something they'll tease me about it. Oh well...
But I could've sworn I read somewhere that he was originally a stage actor? Is this true or was I daydreaming?

Yes, prior to the Phantom movie, he did Oklahoma and The Full Monty on Broadway, plus The Pajama Game in 2006.

Vocally and acting wise, he's amazing. Plus, he's not bad looking... at all. But I didn't like some of the directors choices.
Did anyone see him in Carousel and Allegro? I thought he was amazing. I also heard him in The Full Monty. That was really good, same goes to Bright Lights, Big City, even though I'm not a fan of it, he and Jesse L. Martin were good.
Movie wise, I saw Passengers. The movie itself... sucked. But Patrick Wilson is quite the actor.
Anyone seen Purples Violets?

Was it really his birthday two days ago? Damn! I'm marking that on my calendar for next year.
Oh! This is a little late, but I'm gonna post it anyways.
Congrats Patrick and Dagmara on your beautiful baby. Kassain is so cute, as is his older brother, Kalin. You two must be so proud. Congrats again!
Not that he's reading this, but still.

Patrick played Raoul perfectly! If you thought his voice was weak, check out this video of him singing for ALW in his audition (although he already had the part). He sings effortlessly. I think he was singing in character in the movie - soft and tender; not weak!
