Erik is my hero,
I'm probably repeating something already said, but when does the next bond competition end? And where did you get that phantom/bathing/swimming picture in your banner? Is that part of a deleted scene or just something from a photo shoot?

If I remember correctly, KT said that the photo she got in her signature was a photo manipulation. Basically someone took the photo and made it look like The Phantom. But she can correct me if I'm wrong. :)

Really? It looks dead on! But I just had to laugh when I saw the quote with it. That was rather clever! :)

::Beams:: Why, thank you, Music! And yes, if you can read the little type in the bottom right hand corner, it says, "Phanip by Katu." I always make sure to get the artist's permission before using phanart for sigs/avatars, so I emailed her and she said okay.
I believe the face shot she used of Erik is from the NOWL scene...it appears that way, at any rate.
And I have no idea when the voting will be ending...I'm simply the messenger girl...I just found the link on gb.net.

Hes is a great actor in general...I think I will always love him...alrigh...enough of me talking abot Gerry...go on w/ whatever you were talking about.

I think it's interesting how he's not toned (or atleast in every shirtless picture I've ever seen) at all yet he still gets great parts. I think that it wouldn't hurt if he was...but that it definately shows how good of an actor he is.

I think it depends on the role...I've seen quite a number of his films, and he's got quite a sculpted build in, say, TR:2, Mrs. Brown, and Attila. I can see what you mean in Timeline, but with the other three, he's very... He's really quite... He... I...

Well, he's back up...sort of. Hey, did everybody hear about Gerry's newest role in Frank Miller's 300? Here's the main page of Gerry's site, and the info is the second update from the top.
Gerry to Star in 300 (http://www.gerardbutler.net/index_main.php)
I'd give you guys the link to the actual thread about his role, but they recorded Gerry welcoming everyone to the site, and I thought you people might appreciate the sound of his voice. ;) Cheers.

Well, the icon itself doesn't have sound, but when you click on the front page of the site, Gerry says (and I quote):
"Hi there, this is Gerry Butler, and welcome to gb.net, and I'd just like to thank all the girls there for their hard work and support. Cheers."
::Girly, dreamy sigh:: He sounds so very sexy when he says "Cheers." Hence, the reason I used it as my valediction two posts up. :D

I just had to come back... I was decorating (...or perhaps a more appropriate term would be "covering from floor to ceiling") my locker with Phantom and Gerry pics, and I came to the conclusion that Mr. Butler is truly the most beautiful man ever created.

Hello from Pennsylvania! I am joining a group of Gerard Butler fans in a campaign to get him on talk shows on the East Coast. As you may or may not know, Gerard recently starred in the Academy Award-nominated film, Phantom of the Opera, and has also appeared in numerous indies and foreign flicks. One of his newest films, Beowulf and Grendel, has been receiving a universal "thumbs up" from critics at the Toronto Film Festival.
We would all be very grateful if you considered inviting him as a guest on your show. You wouldn't regret it!
Cheers,

I was absoutly thrilled at ALW choice for Gerry to be the phantom. With his sexy voice and oh so wonderful good looks it couldn't get much better. Just thinking about it makes me week in the knees. There are some who say he was a terrable choice, but look around if he was so bad how many of us would be here today. Honestly, it was the 2004 movie that hooked me to phantom, and the fabulous cast is what made it so wonderful. I fell in love with the music and the man so it doesnt;t get any better than this.

Fabulous actor. Nice tone. Horrible technique.
I mean, couldn't they have chosen Josh Groban (he auditioned)? I understand that Joel Schmauer wanted to sex it up (well, no, I don't, but whatever), but Josh is pretty hot, too. Lovely eyes.
Anyway. At least he admits he has no training and experience and that he didn't do nearly as well as the standard for Phantoms are. Unlike Emmy Rossum.

I do like Gerry - but at times he wasnt quite the Phantom I was used to from various stage shows I saw. However, he did well and hes a very good actor. Maybe we all have our own image of the phantom in our minds;my one is amixture of the best bits of the ones Ive seen. And I love themall.

"Attila" is what brought Gerard Butler to my attention! I LOVE longhaired men, and he was sooo gorgeous and sexy in this film, as well as being a darned good actor with a very physical, very difficult role. I have watched other films--"Reign of Fire" and "TR 2" included, hoping he'd be given the opportunity to strut his stuff. "POTO" is the nearest he's come.
Has this site been mentioned before?
http://www.gerardbutlergals.com
I hope this link works because they have a multitude of amazing pictures from Gerry's works! Yes, I collected bunches of Gerry pics, including the full-length-on-the-bed-wearing-very-little, my favorite Gerry photo of all time! YUM! DROOL! LUST!
Yes, he was somewhat lacking in the voice department (Sorry! But, you shouldn't be worrying about Erik hitting those high notes with enough strength.), but he packed a lot of emotion into his interpretation of the songs. Yes, Josh Groban might have been better with the songs, but, he's so gosh darn pretty that he might not have worked in that way.
I do have to mention that I watched the Sarah B/Antonio Banderas number on Youtube. WOW! Antonio as the Phantom... Give me a moment to recover.
I just got this from the above-linked site. I hope it's OK to use it here:
11/6 - Hilary Swank Injured on the Set of "PS I Love You"
http://movies.about.com/
From Rebecca Murray
A Freak Accident Involving Her Co-Star Gerard Butler Leaves Swank in Stitches
If you're going to be injured on a movie set, then I say having the accident occur while you're watching one of the sexiest men on the planet - Gerard Butler - strip is the way to go.
Hilary Swank apparently sustained a cut to her forehead during a particularly entertaining scene from movie PS I Love You (currently filming in New York). Butler, who plays Swank's husband in the film, was performing a striptease when his suspenders became snagged. They hit Swank in the forehead, causing an injury which required a couple of stitches and a short break from filming. As far as I know Swank's not requesting a stand-in for the scene when production begins again shortly (so all those whose hands shot up at the very idea of taking Swank's place can just relax).
Swank recently appeared as a femme fatale in The Black Dahlia and has Freedom Writers and The Reaping set to open in 2007.
Gerard Butler (Phantom of the Opera, Dear Frankie) will next be seen (almost naked) in 300, an action epic based on Frank Miller's graphic novel.

At first, i have to admit, i didn't think much of Mr Butler as the Phantom. The voice was wrong, he didn't seem old enough etc. etc.
But know i can truly say that I've been converted. I think the main reason i was a bit sniffy at first was having heard the usual way the Phantom has been played/sung. But once you get over that he's not trying to be like a stage production Phantom..but a Gerry Butler Phantom. Then you get it.
His voice is great, it has a 'raw' kind of feel to it. I think it was imdb that i saw a quote from ALW saying that he always wanted the Phantom to have a rock kind of voice which is somthing he thinks Gerry has.
So yes...i love listening to him sing, and i can't enjoy any of the other phantoms the same way as i enjoy Mr Butlers singing.

I LOVE GERRY! I think he was the best Phantom actually. (no offense to you Micheal phans but...) Michael just sounded patient throughout the whole "Down once more" scene. I would be angry if I were the phantom. If you don't see it, listen to one right after the other. Michael is more patient sounding then Gerry. THe phantom isn't happy at this point. He knows mobs are after him. He wants to get this over with. Every phantom has had opera training, except Gerry. But The phantom lived BENETH the opera house, not above. You can be musically inclined without being trained. He wouldn't have gone up there and said, "Oh, hello, I'm O.G. and I want voice lessons!" No, he'd get killed. Where would he get voice lessons if he spent his early life on display at a gypsy fair and the second part of his life UNDER an opera house as a "Ghost".

I've listened to Michael C. sing some Phantoms song, his voice has a lot more expression - sort of suits Raoul's character but you can also argue that it suits the All I ask of you reprise part where the Phantom sings.
Gerard Butler did a great job too, him and Emmy looked good together as in the age thing and also the voice....I liked his voice, it was very mysterious.

I...am in dangerous waters here but I'm going to do what I always do, and that's fire my facts and take no prisoners. Please don't think that I'm bashing because I'm actually anti-bash (except for Mary Sues). Here goes:
I do get a little tiffed when people compare MC's DWM to GB's DWM. There's only a couple lucky ones who saw Michael live, but for the rest of us, we only have a recording from 20 years ago to compare with a film made 4 years ago that took at least a week to film. Hmmm....
As a singer myself, I've got to say that Gerry just isn't a good singer. That's because he isn't a singer period. The entire role of Erik/Phantom lay well out of his range. When Joel said that he wanted Erik to be 'rock and roll' I think they meant his overall image. How he carried himself in a way. His voice too, but they wanted to give off the bad boy image as well. With some more support and vibrato, Gerry would have sounded a lot better. Bottom line, ALW/Joel wanted Gerry mainly for his acting talents.
Alright, do your worst.
tiannangel
05-19-2008, 10:32 AM
Hmm...I don't feel inclined to "do my worst"....:D
But I disagree. Gerry is actually a relatively good singer, even though his voice might not be as "trained" as more professional singers like Michael.
I love Gerry's portrayal of Erik, and like most phangirls, I adore his voice too. I've only ever heard Michael Crawford sing the theme, and I do think his voice is wonderful, no doubt.
But since the 2004 movie version was the first production of PotO I've ever seen, I think it kinda imprinted Gerry as the Phantom, for me. I agree with many of the above people, that his raw magnetism is just super alluring and sexy...

I used to be a Gerik purist, but then I heard teh original cast. Compare them and you see that Gerry can't sing. Now that I have more singing experience, I can honestly say that Gerry can't sing. Fabulous actor, but he can't sing. A lot of his notes were fixed on a computer.
As I usually do, I'm staying on Viktoria's side with this. *Hides behind Viktoria to avoid angry gerry phangirls*

*spreads arms out* I'll protect you! :D
But I agree with you as well Chrissy, he physically isn't a good singer (believe it or not singing is like a science and people can be physically not able to sing to full potential as others). He lacks vibrato, support, and the over all vocal range for the role. I seriouslly can't make it through the begining of the AIAOY reprise because of how much he chests and cracks on the lower notes. It's lie he's not a baritone or a tenor almost. He's just Gerry.
People may be angry at this or have different opinions (which is fine) but I speak the what the truth most likely is.
Madame le Courayer
07-24-2008, 07:15 AM
Gerry seems to sing almost breathlessly. A lot of amateur singers, when they can't reach a note or don't have the range, will "breathe" the song instead of sing it. It's almost like a survival thing when you're singing a song you're not vocally up to. It's too bad he was miscast in this role.
I'll not compare him to other singers who have sung the role (ahem, Colm Wilkinson-the best!) but I will say aside from the singing (which you really can't sweep under the rug considering) he acted the part very well. That you cannot knock...he is a very good dramatic actor. He did capture the Phantom's anger, if not his physical appearance (as I imagine the Phantom should look) nor did he sing very brilliantly. While I generally hate the very idea of dubbing, maybe...well, maybe they should have...
On a scale of one to ten I give him:
Singing - 5
Acting - 8
Appearance - 1
OMG! I see the Gerik girls coming!!!! (runs to hide)

Exactly. I too was introduced to POTO through the 2004 movie and so I always have pictured Erik like that a lot. OH and sorry but this just makes me mad  I hate when people think Gerik phan-girls just like him for his body. Seriously we like his singing and most of us have heard a little Michael seen another movie, read the book those kind of things and still Gerry holds a part of our hearts. And he is what most of us learned about POTO from and therefore as we all know our fist Phantom holds a special part of our hearts. And I kind of like the no vibrato it sounds more Powerful to me and therefore really good to me. I also like Michael. I loved his DOM but still Gerry's my fave. I'm glad to see there are more Gerik phans than I thought. I thought most were purist but I'm happy to see all the Gerry phans on this sight. Also he probably would have gotten sick (this is my idea of what would have happened not from an interview so creteak me if you like) if he had used stage make-up. With the lights on the set and that heavy make-up it wouldn't have been good and they wanted their own Erik ALW said that he didn't want just to create the stage on film but make the film it's own. And they would definetly not do the Lon make-up 'cause it's the musical (and with color you would probably see a little blood on our dear Erik caused by it. Watch the Claude Rains special features it explains everything) They had to make Erik a little young. It's the movies and so most people now a days wouldn't be as intrigued if there wasn't a little more modern kind of look. And as said many many times before Erik would have not had any profesional training. He only had a little bit of training as a child and from there on out he only had his natural singing ability. Sorry if this offended anyone it's not supposed to. I just always go on looooooooooooong Gerry rants. Yeah ummm... well *hides from any sharp objects being thrown at her*

Well I can't really argue too defensivly with most things BUT:
It's true that Erik was supposed to have natural talent. Talent. The talent that Gerry unfortunatly lacked. Even though Erik wasn't supposed to be professionally trained, he still supposed to have this unearthly, powerful voice that put Christine in a state of trance. I'll admit, Gerry's voice is very smooth and soothing (like chocolate ice cream) but it still doesn't have that god-like quality to make him a great Erik.

Ah, Viktoria! Always making your point with dignity and grace!
Again, I have to agree with you. Erik was suppossed to have an angelic, unbeatable, God-like voice. Unfortunately, Gerry certainly isn't God-like or angelic voice and is very easy to best (take crawford or cudia for example). Gerry's voice, to put it delicately, isn't good. It's rough and very untrained. Erik is suppossed to be phanomenal; not mediocre.

(Please, no bashing! This is just my opinon!)
I personally think Gerry has a wonderful voice. Then again, he was the first person I saw play the Phantom, stage or otherwise. He did an amazing job in the movie!
