View Full Version : Miranda Richardson [Madame Giry]
The Phantom

Discuss the Miranda Richardson here who portrays Madame Giry in the new Phantom of the Opera movie. I thought she did an excellent job, though I'm not sure if she should have pulled off the heavy French accent. It was nice and all... but if the other characters would have done it to it might have been more effective.
I also can't wait to see Miranda in Goblet of Fire when she plays Rita Skeeter, the obnoxious reporter for the Daily Prophet.

I liked her as Madame Giry. For, like you said, she was the only one who bothered to try to stick with the setting.
And she looked like she could be the mom of Meg, played by Jennifer Ellison.

I noticed that too! Miranda and Jennifer Ellison seemed to have simular facial features that made them look like they were mother and daughter. It worked out well since Jennifer was slightly shorter than Miranda like most daughters will be when they're young.

I love Madame Giry. She's my favorite character. I had no clue that Miranda was playing in Goblet of Fire. I'll have to look out for that.
She doesn't strike me as the Rita type. Rita was described as almost manly in her features. Miranda seems to have a feminine aura around her, which I'm not sure meets with Rita, but we'll have to see, now won't we?

Miranda is great as Madame Giry! I think she really brings some depth to the chracter that's often lacking in the stage version. She is just amazing! And yes, she and Jennifer Ellison look like they could be mother and daughter.
I think she could be a good Rita. She's an amazingly talented actress, and I've never seen her with the same mannerisms or voice for two characters. Most actors start doing similar roles (i.e. ingenue, hero, etc.) but she (like Cate Blanchett) is never the same character twice.

I think Miranda is an amazing choice for this role! She has that air about her, that one where she seems to know more then anyone else knows. It adds a lot to the character making her more realistic and mysterious at the same time.

I loved her as Madame Giry! She was so great! She played the part perfectly I thought! She was devoted to the Phantom, and could be very secretive when it was needed. I was really surprised to look at all the movies that she had been in and notice she was Rita Skeeter! I would have never imagined it was her otherwise. She was so reserved and totally different in POTO. But I love her in both roles!

I really really like her she is a great actress not so such on her singing voice though. But then again the character does sing as much in the movie then she does in the stage. But I love the mother daughter between her and meg.

Long ago, Miranda proved her chamelonic approach to acting, just as her sister and her mother have. She'll never match her mother, but she has become an interesting character actress.
But, why the heavy French accent when so few of the cast tried one? She is quite a mystery, and I always feel as if there is missing footage that should go with some scenes, as if we are seeing just a hint of her role. Though "drabbed down", she does manage to capture attention when she is in the scene. It does seem as if she knows all but reveals only a fraction.
I have yet to read the novels, having only recently obtained copies, so I might change my mind about the portrayal.
I believe it was Miranda who portrayed Elizabeth Regina in "Blackadder", wasn't it? If so, that probably was her best role! Imagine playing Elizabeth I as quite a daffy ditz! LOL!
Miranda has quite a filmography. If anyone is interested, I can list some films although a simple Net hunt would turn up the same info, wouldn't it?

I think she did wonderfully. She did a very good French accent. I never knew she could sing! They did very good at casting her.

I prefered the film Madame Giry compared to the stage production one...Miranda Richardson was more motherly...She was more caring I think to Christine whereas the one in the stage production was really patronising, threatening...although I do think it is part of her character to be, she didn't really need to be SO strict!

She just brings Madmame Giry such mysterious ways and secretive thoughts. Between hiding the fact she knows Erik and managing everything for dance Madame Giry is awesome! Richardson made her better!

She was really good. I liked how she was so motherly to Christine and how she was always trying to protect everyone from Erik. And I liked how mysterious she was! She pulled off that French accent really well.

Yes her accent...that's the one thing I can't stand about Madame Girys...their accents aren't correct. I know I can't do one well, but I can tell a fake one from a real one...well convincing, so you know ;) she rocked it!

I think that the problem is that they get refined and French mixed up. Most managers tend to have British accents because they want to sound more refined. Mme. Giry wants the same effect without a British accent. Besdies, she has the most French sounding name and since she's mostly a speaking role, minus Notes and Masquerade, it registers to the audience better.

I guess it really is about diction. We are required to do a French monologue and everyone questions, "Why French" and then we get our score cards back and then realize, "Wow...French diction--and other languages other than English, British and somehow Italian, are hard..." Stories of acting children's failures.

I was shocked to see that Miranda Richardson was playing Madame Giry. She's such a talented and versatile actress. And she, surprisingly, could sing. That was a nice relief consididering she was one of the few who could actually sing the part assigned to her.
Plus, she was in Harry Potter, so that makes her even more awesome in my book.
