View Full Version : My screenplay
Christine Daaé

I've recently written a screenplay based on the novel. It follows the book pretty closely, I think, even down to the specific lines sung in different parts. I would like to get some feedback from Phantom fans, so email me if you are interested in reviewing it. Thanks!

Guys, it's awesome! You have to review it! I enjoyed it immensely. :) It's a really clever take on the novel, with a few great little touches of Zelda's own invention. I love the way it is mostly Leroux, but still has a "unique" touch of difference to it, so it stands on it's own yet is so the same. (Does that make sense?) Anyway, it was a very good script, and personally, I hope to see it filmed one day. It's such a pleasure to come on this board, where there are so many talented people. :)

Thanks, Cinty! You'll be one of the people I dedicate the film to, I promise. I've always thought Johnny Depp would make a great Erik, so I'll try to get him. As for Christine . . . *smiles evilly* that would be moi. What do you guys think? Raoul would have to be a good up-and-comer, and maybe if I could get Kenneth Branaugh in one of the roles . . . heh.

You're more than welcome. Ah yes, I think Johnny Depp would be good... and suggestions for Raoul would be.. Colin Firth *drools* or.. Jeremy Northam!!! *faints* But they are probably both too old now... Kenneth Brannagh would be good... to direct maybe?? He is a grea director... he is also an awesome actor... oh, and I'm sure you will be lovely as Christine. :D

Christine is mine! *brandishes sword* My role! Mine!
Thank you for your faith in my abilities, Cinty. People tell me I look like Sarah Brightman, which may or may not be a good thing . . . my eyes aren't nearly as big, and I don't have the deer-in-the-headlights look about me. But enough about me . . . yesh, I am Christine.
Johnny Depp -- my sister will be so jealous that she's not playing Christine, so she can't kiss him. Around the time I plan on doing this, he'll be in his late forties -- appropriate age for Erik. And I do so admire his acting abilities.
Kenneth Branaugh . . . one of the managers, maybe? He'd make a great Richard, I think.
I'll produce myself, and as for the director . . . hmm. Clint Eastwood?

Well, I just sent my review in. I adored it immensely, and hope to see this film made one day! Or, even better, I hope to be directing it! ;)
Johnny Depp as Erik... I know he'll be able to act the part, but can he sing? If not, his singing voice should probably be dubbed. And who would make a good Persian, in your opinion?
Christine Daaé

Depp was in a band for a while before he was famous. But can he sing opera? I don't know . . . however, Josh Groban can make my heart melt with his voice. Give him a few years, and he would sound just like Erik. I sing, so I'll do my own "Anges purs, anges radieux". As for the Persian . . . oh, God, that's a tough one. I'll have to think about that.
IamErik, I'm glad you liked the script! Contact me in a few years, and I'll see about giving you a shot at directing.

To IamErik:
Since I can't get to my other computer right now, I'll answer some of your questions here.
I didn't read the original French version -- my French is terrible, I can't use it to save my life -- but I did read the lastest, complete English translation of the novel by Jean-Marc and Randy Lofficier. It's a wonderful adaptation, though my one problem with it is that they use a frog instead of a grasshopper for the "boxes of life and death". Weird.
The torture chamber would, indeed, be nearly unworkable for a movie. Not only that, but in my spiffy Final Draft 7 software, the script is at 137 pages, and that's roughly two hours and seventeen minutes of screen time. Already almost too long. So I cut it. I never liked that part, anyway -- it always seemed so pointless to me.
I didn't read Susan Kay's novel before, actually, but I have since, and it's a marvelous piece of work. Even if I had read it before I started working on my script, though, I would want it to be slightly different -- especially since my dictionary says that a sultana would be a sultan's chief wife or daughter, rather than mother.
Glad you like the Giry and Erik scene. I like it too. I like the ending, as well, and am so glad you enjoyed it. The whole point was to make people cry.
As for your nitpicking, I'll take some of it into account -- for instance, now the boxes will be connected to the table. I did think that seeing Erik mock Raoul was cool though. I don't think I was clear on how exactly that would look, so here it is: we would only see the lower portion of Erik's face -- his mouth and chin -- next to Raoul's ear. As for Christine being a blue-eyed brunette rather than a blonde -- I'm a blue-eyed brunette, and I wrote the role for myself. I've always wanted to play Christine, so here's my chance. Heh heh. As for that Carlotta-too-massive-as-Marguerite line being repeated twice, I don't know how that happened. I'll fix it.
Now that I'm thinking about it, I do want you to direct. You and I seem to have a good idea how this should come about, and you have good suggestions. We'll talk at length about it later.

I don't know exactly what I could put you in yet, Cinty, but have no doubt that you will be a part of it! I will remember you, I promise.
By the way, my pictures are finally up. I took four pictures of myself, just for my Phantom's Opera friends. Aren't you happy? Heh.

**Written around 11:30 AM**
I finally got to read this now that IÂ’m not allowed to get on the Internet until 5 PM, and WOW. Tears are streaming down my face now that I finished it. You did a marvelous job, and I have only two pieces of constructive criticism for you: In a few places, they talked as if they were in the modern day, not 1881. And I donÂ’t know if this was intentional or not, but the Persian was from Persia. But other than those minor details, I think it is perfect the way it is, ESPECIALLY the ending! (From the abduction on-ward) That was definitely the best ending IÂ’ve read in a good while. And I can understand why you didnÂ’t include the torture chamber, and I think that might actually have interrupted the flow of things.
I think that this film version would be better than ALWÂ’s, because it is better written and you feel even MORE pity for Erik when all is said and done. And the flashbacks of Raoul and Christine might actually turn me into a RC shipper for a bit. Also, brava on the use of the scorpion and the grasshopper, theyÂ’re two of the things I missed the most in all the other films. Zelda, you did a superb job and I applaud you!!! Erik would be so very proud, dear. THANK YOU for finally writing a screenplay that follows the original story as it was meant to be portrayed.
Your Obedient Servant,
--Manda

Thank you so much, Manda! I did make a few changes -- for instance, the almost-sex scene between Raoul and Christine at the end is taken out, and I changed my unintentional references to India. I don't know what possessed me to write that particular scene; maybe it's because my ex-boyfriend thought it would be cool. Last time I listen to him . . . and I knew the Persian was from Persia, so why did I put India? I don't know. But it's changed.
Once again, thank you so much. I'm recruiting actors and technicians, by the way . . . so if you have any film or acting skills, let me know!

Thankyou for taking that out. I thought it was a good idea to leave it out. It was a little bit too daring, though a nice idea. I must agree with Mandas thoughts about Raoul and Christine as children. I don't know whether I told you before about how much I enjoyed that part! it was sweet as! But anyway, thankyou for taking that scene out. The kiss on the boat, I think, really did it.
Good work! I can't wait for this movie! (and my role in it, hehe) Can you picture me as a Meg? lol!

Hmm... I'd LOVE to be in a POTO movies; perhaps just a small role. :) I was lying in bed last night and was like, Maybe La Sorelli! What sort of person do you envision her being? (I have pics posted if you'd like to see what I look like. If you can think of a different role, let me know!) *hugs* :duck:

I'd love to read it, but I'll warn you, if you can't take harsh criticism, you don't want my review. From what the other's have said, I should love it, but if I don't like it, I'll let you know. Sound alright? If so...

Having Johnny Depp as Erik... That's a brilliant idea! I don't know how fond he would be of singing, though. Recently, in an article of Charle and the Chocolate Factory, he admitted that he was glad he wasn't singing.
As for director... I don't think Clint Eastwood would be too great of an idea. I just don't think he'd give the movie a right 'feel'.
I'd actually love Tim Burton to. XD

Sorry about the double post... I just wanted to make sure you noticed this. And I'm also sorry that I'm took such a long time to read it...
Anyway, I really loved it. You seem to make more of the humor in the story more upfront; which is good, obviously. My only criticism--Which I had to really strain to see-It that I think you need to describe the appearance of certain characters more. Like Madame Giry. In the book, I believe she was it mentioned her having a hat of some sort, and so on. Just as one example...
I'm sorry I really can't say more. I'm not used to reading too many screenplays... But it was a very interesting read. I'm going to save it on my computer to read it again sometime. ^_^
