Anyone else here seen this yet? I saw it this past June, and am going to see it again on June 26. I've becoem insanely obsessed with it, and have been known to sing random lyrics from it whenever I feel the urge. If you've seen it, you'll know why. ;)
If you haven't heard of Wicked, go check out this site: http://www.wickedthemusical.com

I love Wicked! I haven't gotten to see it yet, but I will in October when the tour goes to Denver. This is my only opportunity, seeing as I never get to go to New York, as it's too expensive and I live way too far away.

Well, if you ever get to see it Steve, you'll understand why she's so obsessed. ;) My parents are reluctant to let me see Broadway shows in general (don't ask me why), but I've already seen Wicked once, as I said, and they're actually letting me see it a second time. I begged and pleaded and grovelled like crazy, but they let me. ^_^
Molli, I'm sure you'll love it even more when you see it. :) I got to see it last time the week before the Tony Awards, so it was still the full original cast. Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth were amazing. :D You'll have to let me know what the touring group is like. If they ever are allowed to come here to jersey, I want to see it a third time. ^_^
Oh, and Steve? Get the soundtrack. The music alone is enough to get a person obsessed. ;) Ask your friend.

Yes, Yes indeed. I love Wicked to death, I don't know anyone that DOESNT like Wicked that has heard of it. I am sad to say i have not seen it but I will be seeing it during the summer hopefully. Since it is coming out here on tour! Ah i am so excited.. I really wanted to see Idena and Kristin perform though...

I haven't seen Wicked, but I'm definitely interested! In fact, I'm considering buying the cast recording from iTunes as soon as I have some extra cash. :)

Oh, by no means is she evil! I'll tell you right now that Wicked is one of those stories where you learn that the one who was supposedly evil is actually just misunderstood - and they make you believe it. I can't watch The Wizard of Oz anymore without thinking "You're fighting the wrong people!" every time I see Dorothy.
By the way, Kristen and Idina were amazing, for anyone who didn't get to see it with the original cast. ;) And Jess - "Whenever I see someone less fortunate than I - and let's face it, who isn't less fortunate than I? - my tender heart tends to start to bleed! And when someone needs a makeover I simply have to take over. I know I know exactly what they need. And ever in your case, though it's the toughest case I've yet to face, don't worry. I'm determined to succeed. Follow my lead and yes, indeed, you will be..." ^_^ We ahd a substitute during band today, and me and my friends spent the entire block singing random Broadway songs instead of watching the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. :p

Yeah, she hurt her leg in one of the trap doors on stage during a performance. She never did get to take her final bows. (And it's Menzel, not Mendzel. ;))

I've heard lots of things about this and would really like to see it. I was listening to the show tunes station on Launchcast when one of the songs (I THINK it was called "One Good Day") came on, and I LOVED it! I may just go buy the soundtrack and listen to it...

Anyways, I just bought the OCR of "Wicked" on Ebay! YAY! (My friend's Xanga played Popular and after refreshing the page 15 times to listen to it again, I realized I needed the CD.) ~lol~

I get to go see it in October!!!!! I CAN'T WAIT!!! I only wish I could have seen it with the original cast; especially Idina... But at least I'm going! And I absolutely ADORE the OCR; I listen to it at least two times a day, usually a lot more. :D My absolute favorite song is "For Good". If anybody knows how to put music on your Xanga, please PM me and explain it, because I REALLY want to put that song on mine.
And to go back on topic--Who's your favorite character? *points to gender* I think mine is obvious.... *giggles* And please go join my NEW Wicked board! (http://elphieglinda.conforums3.com) It is new, so please be patient with me. I am also currently accepting moderators on it, so just PM me on THAT board with an application! And to try to get more people on this thread...
What is everyone's top 3 favorite songs? ((I did this on www.phantomoftheopera.com and you have no idea how much activity it sparked... :D))
Mine are:
1. For Good, because of the amazing emotion you can hear in Idina and Kristin's voices. I STILL tear up whenever I hear it, even though I've listened to it about a zillion times... :( VERY sad song...
2. Defying Gravity, because Idina's voice is just so powerful! This song gives me chills, especially when it gets to the "If you care to find me..." line.
3. Toughie, but I'd have to say "Popular" because it is just so wonderfully Galinda! I love her little squeals and giggles, Kristin is AMAZING!
Now it's YOUR turn! :D

I just got home from seeing it for the second time, and it's still just as amazing! In fact, I'd have to say that it was almost better than the first time. The actresses playing Elphaba (Shoshana Bean) and Ga/Glinda (Megan Hilty) were just as good as Idina and Kristin. In fact, their acting - and singing - had more emotion that both of the originators of the roles. Yeah, um, at risk of getting attacked by an angry mob, I think they might have actually put on a better performance than Idina and Kristin.
David Ayers, the actor currently playing Fiyero, did a fantastic job as well, but Norbert Leo Butz will always be Fiyero to me. David's acting and singing, like Shoshana's and Megan's, was more emotional than the original's, and he played the part just as well too (actually, in my opinion, his acting was better than Norbert's), but his voice was not quite as well suited to "Dancing Through Life." Don't get me wrong; everything else he sang, and most of Dancing Through Life, was amazing, but there were a few instances where it was just a little too obvious that he had to work harder to hit some of the notes.
Ben Vereen was almost as good as Joel Grey, but he was missing that "something" that made Joel the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Oh, and the new Madame Morrible? Nuh-uh, no way is Rue better than Carole! Her acting was great and all, but Carole took the part and made it her own. Not to mention the fact that Rue can't sing. Out of the already small number of lines that Carole Shelley sang in the show, Rue only attempted one, and it didn't even sound 'good.' As in, it was more a scratchy shout than song.
As for Boq, well, I have no complaints. Michelle is as fantastic as ever, as is Sean McCourt and William Youmans. Hm... Okay, that's enough of my ranting for now, I think. ;) All in all, the show is still just as wonderful as ever. :D
To answer your question, Manda, my three favorite songs (in no particular order) are:
"Defying Gravity" >> If you ask me, this is the most visually powerful piece from the entire show, and the music itself makes it all the more magnificent. When I saw Wicked the first time, it was also the first time I'd heard any of the music from it. Seeing and hearing "Defying Gravity" not only made me go "WOW!!! O_O," but it also affected me on a more personal level: I've always tried to live my life by defying gravity; doing what I think is right, even when those around me tell me it's not or it can't be done. Really, it's how I've managed to keep myself from letting the world bring me down (;)) like most of my friends have. I'm not rebellious, I live with integrity!
"Dancing Through Life" >> Ah, if only life was as simple as Yero makes it sound. Of course, the ever-present music always helps. ;)
"For Good" >> Is it possible to NOT love this song? It's so sad - and so true. Can anybody honestly say that they have ever been close to someone who didn't affect them in some way?
I actually think "No Good Deed" and "Popular" are just as much my favorites as the ones I listed, but you said only three, so I listed three.

I really wanted to see Wicked when Randy Harrison from Queer as Folk was starring in it, because I love him to bits, and I've been trying to see a live stage performance of his ever since I found out he was now concentrating on performing in stage productions. But I didn't realize he had performed in the show until his run was over. I hear it's supposed to be a very good play though. And I'd still love to see it someday.

Dee's last run on Wicked was in January, and she barely made it to her last performance because of an injury during the ending of the show. She was supposed to start filming RENT soon after, but her injury postponed filming there as well.
But anyway, I adore Wicked! I sang "I'm Not That Girl" for a solo in my theatre class last year and everyone thought I did better than great...so now playing Elphaba's one of my dreams in life...
And I may be the only one, but the first time I heard "Defying Gravity" it moved me to tears...

No, Steph, you're not the only one. Defying Gravity had me in tears as well - and I wanted to smack the girl next to me when she asked why on earth I was crying!

While it didn't bring me to tears it was pretty darn close! "For Good" DID--and still does!--bring me to tears no matter how many times in a row I listen to it... It reminds me of that "Phantom" qoute (going off memory here so probably not correct): "There are some sounds so beautiful the human mind percieves it as pain"

I haven't seen it yet, but I have the CD and I am completely in love with it.
In the meantime I only JUST finished the book and it appears the story is (very) different. I am not going to elaborate on the subject because I don't want to spoil it for anyone.
I recommend the book to all of you who want to find out more on Elphaba's life. It's become one of my favourite books, though it's a bit weird on sometimes; it's a real treat!
(Sequel is coming out in Octobre called "Son of a Witch" and I can't wait to read it)

I saw it a couple weeks ago in Chicago, it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. I was SO excited when we heard that Ben Vereen was going to be playing the Wizard! We also had Sarah Jane Everman as our Glinda.
As I do at alot of Broadway shows I see I start crying about... 20 minutes in beacuse I think that I won't get to see the beginning again for a long time and that depresses me but the I think about how much is left of the show and I'm happy again...
I'm hopefully going again on Nov. 16th with my Drama Club if I can get a ticket (We only had 100) and my parents are taking me for Christmas. I'm so excited.

Anyways...
I actually haven't seen it yet, but I will next year. I'm so excited, it's insane. I think I love all of the songs the same, each in their own special way. I'm actually sick of For Good (I used it for an audition - I've heard it entirely too many times for my own good now) I never cry when I hear Defying Gravity, I feel really like, empowered or proud. Fiyero (Norbert Leo Butz) has, hands down, the sexiest voice I have ever heard. The book is really weird too, very, very, different from the musical. I got it for my birthday and I love it to death. I put the sequel on hold from my library already! *squee* So excited. :D

I saw Wicked like in late October early November (I just forgot the exact day) I liked it. I loved the songs For Good, Defying Gravity, and Popular I sing those almost all the time. (only because I have them memorized and I have the cd)
Anyway...I loved Shoshana Bean as Elphaba I like Idina Menzel too. (Can you tell that Elphaba's my favorite character?)
My friend is absoulutely crazy about Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth we were in New York City once and we were talking about Wicked and she said that she wanted to go but she would have loved to see Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel when they were in it.

I have not seen the show yet, but I might get to see it through school (thank God for Musciology class!) in Chicago since that's where I live hehe. But my best friend burned me a copy of the original Broadway cast and those songs are my favourites! It's so funny someone else posted them. I do agree Idina Menzel's voice is bloody amazing.
But yes "Defying Gravity" is marvelous, I put it on repeat 7 times today because it's such an uplifting song. "As Long As You're Mine" is so romantic, and "What is this Feeling?" makes me laugh, tis a fun song. :D

I love Wicked!
My favorite G(a)linda is Kristen Chenowith. My favorite Elphaba is Idina Menzel.
Wicked is opening in London in September. Idina's starring in it. Which is weird, because she damaged her voice during her run as Elphaba, and I, for one, would never play a part that had damaged my voice, again. Anyone know who they're casting as G(a)linda?

Wow, it's been a while. In March, I finally bought the cast recording. I listened to it during my flight to Japan; I've learned that there are few better times to get acquainted with new music than a nice, long plane flight.
I absolutely fell in love with it, and I really want to see the show now. I saw bits of it (including the end of "Defying Gravity") on a documentary about the history of Broadway, and am eager for more. ^_^
My 3 favorite songs:
Defying Gravity - it perfectly captures my philosophy of life. In high school, I reached a point where I finally realized that I no longer care what the "teeming masses" think of me or what I do. If they're okay with it, great. If not, that's their problem, not mine.
For Good - Another song that strikes me as being right on the money. As Shadow said before, I can't think of a single person I knew well who hasn't had an effect on who I am today.
Wonderful - Rather simple tune, but I mostly like it for the middle bit. Perception really does affect reality; History is rarely ever black and white, as the textbooks would have you believe.

Wow! I haven't been in this thread for a while!
I've been bitten by the Wicked bug!
After I got the CD for christmas, I copied it onto my computer, and my mom started going crazy over the songs.
I get to see Wicked for it's Toronto return engadgement! whoo!! I got the Grimmerie for Valentines day (don't ask, we usually get small gifts for that day...wouldn't really call that small though o_O)
I think my favourite song is...The Wizard and I. I think it's one of the only "me" songs that I really like. I call it a "me" song because in every musical there is one song that the main character or any character has a "I want" or "Me" song of some sort. I think I like this song the best because it intoduces Elphaba's morals in a really good way. other than that, the music is beautifully written and powerful for this peice. But then of course there is always "Defying Gravity". Very simple set of notes that sound very powerful when played the right way. I love them both. :)
So, I can't agree with you more James, there is nothing better than getting to know new music over a long plane flight! WHOO CALIFORNIA! though I only have 5 hours. meh. it will work for me nonetheless. ^__^

Kristin Chenoweth
08-01-2006, 01:22 AM
I've seen it three times, twice in New York, and once when it came to Pittsburgh. It's seriously the most beautifully-staged show I've ever seen. The casts I saw were:
New York, March '05 -
Elphaba - Shoshana Bean
Glinda - Jennifer Laura Thompson
Fiyero - David Ayers
Morrible - Carole Shelley
Wizard - George Hearn
New York, December '05 -
Elphaba - Shoshana Bean
Glinda - Megan Hilty
Fiyero - David Ayers
Morrible - Jan Neuberger
Wizard - Ben Vereen
Pittsburgh, March '06 -
Elphaba - Stephanie J. Block
Glinda - Kendra Kassebaum
Fiyero - Sebastian Arcelus
Morrible - Carole Shelley
Wizard - David Garrison (Best one of the three, IMO)
All three casts were phenomenal, but Stephanie J. Block was the better Elphaba, and Megan Hilty was the best Glinda. I loved David as Fiyero, but Sebastian Arcelus had a better voice. So yeaah.
I would go see it over and over again, if I had the chance. And my friends all think I'd be a perfect Glinda, vocally and acting-wise...I'd just need a blonde wig. ;)

My absolute favorite song is Defy Gravity it's amazing! I just bought the cd and I listen to that song constantly! The girl who played Elphaba was just...wow! She was a great singer! I don't remember her name, and right now I'm too lazy to check but she really was great!

i saw the musical the day after thanksgiving! it was so cool. i didn't think about it then but it's kinda lik phantom of the opera. i mean Elphaba she's green so they think she's EVIL or WICKED. the Phantom he has a disfigurement so people think he's EVIL or WICKED!! But the whole world is lik that in real life to people in wheel chairs, mental people, and people who are missing a limb or one is too long we think they are WEIRD!! we put them down because it will make us feel better. you really need to get to know someone befor you judge them CHRISTINE didn't even know ERIK that well before she judged him!! THE EVIL LITTLE SELF CONCITED LITTLE WITCH, SHE'S THE WICKED AND THE WHOLE WORLD IS AT FALT FOR THE WAY "DIFFERENT" PEOPLE ARE TREATED. I am beyond love with Wicked. I think that it is the 2nd best thing on Broadway. (Phantom's first...DUH!!!!!). I think that the costumes are incredible. My favorite costume is Glinda's Good Witch costume...I mean how cool is it to ride in a bubble?? I mean really. There is no doubt that Eden Espinosa and Kristen Chenoweth are my favorite Glinda and Elphaba.
I mean Glinda (Kristen) has a 4 octave range at the height of 4 ft 11. How amazing, a 4 octave range is sooo rare. I think Wicked should be tunred into a movie. No doubt there.

Lucky Taya! I got to see it this semester in Chicago, unfortunately my friend arrived late at the train and we missed the first 6 songs but it was spectacular nontheless. I was happy I got to see it anyways. I hope to see it again and this time the entire show. *nods*

I'm going to see it with my friend in Chicago this summer (hopefully...if she doens't skive off on me). I have the soundtrack and a Vocal Selections Book, and have read the novel several times. I love the story! I always that the Wicked Witch had a deeper story than jealousy of a little girl with a pair of ruby slippers, and I adore that Gregory Maguire and Stephen Schwartz took that aspect and made it what it is now. It's almost as popular as the original, and I lvoe that.
Stephen Schwartz is a genius. As are Kristin and Idina--I love them as G(a)linda and Elphaba.

Oh my...I think I am in love all over again. :) No, I haven't seen it...yet, but I got the original cd today and I just love it. I have been listening to Popular forever and I just decided to buy the whole cd. I knew there had been a lot of talk about it and now I can see why! It's is absolutely awesome. Words can't really describe it. The music is great and I can't wait to actually see it. My favorite song would have to be Defying Gravity. I love Idina Menzel! Her voice sends chills up my spine in this play and in Rent. I wish I could sing like her...Anywho, it's 2:30 in the morning and I am wide awake due to this. :D

I haven't seen it but to be honest, as I've said before, I have an overpowering, crazy urge to.
I missed out on seeing it when it came to my city last summer so it won't be coming back for a while. That only leaves Broadway and if my mom and I are paying a lot of money for tickets and transportaion to NYC, I'd want to see Phantom again :)

I haven't seen it but rumor has it that our marching band will be performing it next year for their show. Which will be sweet because our marching band rocks and the music from it is amazing :D and also I want to see our colorguard twirl broomsticks instead of flags which is a likely possibility.

I saw it and if you want to know the honest to God truth, I didn't like it. It was cute and fun but when you break it down, it doesn't have a lot of depth. I liked the book a whole lot better and I wish that they hadn't cutsied things up so much.

You have no idea how excited I am to see it. ONLY A WEEK LEFT! Ahh! you have no idea! One of my friends told me that Elphaba is phenomenal, but the Galinda is nothing special :\ I hope she's not right about Galinda...KEEP IT POSITIVE! :D I can't wait!

I saw the musical on the fifth of June with James, and it was amazing! Our Elphaba was supposed to be Eden Espinosa, but something happened, so we ended up seeing Felicia Ricci instead. I'm actually glad we saw her, because she was brilliant! Her performances of 'No Good Deed' and 'Defying Gravity' were the best of all, and because 'No Good Deed' is my favorite song, this was especially important to me. Kendra Kasselbaum was G(a)linda, and her performance of 'Popular' was hilarious. Actually, every part of her performance was hilarious! I loved her so much because of that.
PS: I think my font clashes with this subforum, but so what? :spin2:
