Away From The Campfire

This poem came from the inspiration of the scene in Susan Kay's novel when Erik and the Persians were all sitting around the campfire. But suddenly, Erik would get up and walk into the forest. A poem from my POV if I had been in that scene lol.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
I close my eyes tightly.
And I can imagine a night –
Where you would stand up from the campfire,
Looking into its brightness, then you turn away.
You murmur you’ll be back and nobody around us questions your authority.
They eat their supper in silence but I watch you.
I watch you.
Your black cloak riding the wind’s soft fingers, you walk into the night.
You walk into the twists and turns of the forest.
And closing my eyes some more –
I can imagine myself getting up to follow you.
I understand how much you want to be alone.
From behind a tree I watch silently, though I can tell you know I’m there.
I would see you stroke the ears of a deer,
Speak with the shy butterfly.
And careful to step over anthills.
And there, you would make the most beautiful music.
The music of nature, the music of heaven.
The music of God.
You and your mare would speak about your lives.
She would understand, she would give hope.
